Agreed with the other reviewers. Kale was a little bitter so I added some carmelized sweet onion to balance, which really improved the dish.

I love anchovies and garlic, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, it was not as good as I hoped and I made it exactly as indicated. I also don't eat a lot of kale, so maybe I'm just not used to the bitterness, thought the anchovies would temper it a bit more. Might try again to see if it's the same. For now, it's just "meh."

I really had high hopes for this recipe after seeing the episode. Garlic, ale, chili peppers, anchovies.... YUM. But everyone in my family agreed this dish was NOT good.... I followed the recipe exactly. My anchovies "melted" into the olive oil. I used an aneheim pepper but the kale turned out really bitter and just not good.

This one's a winner indeed! Ok, I made some changes to the recipe. I got red chard in the farm box this week, not kale, so I used that, including the sliced-up stems which I tossed in a couple of minutes before the greens to give them a head start. Also, I didn't have whole anchovies, but I keep anchovy paste around, which works just as well. I also substituted crushed red pepper flakes for the chili, in part to keep the heat under control, since the kids are not keen on spicy. I used pumpkin ale, which was delicious. The combination of the ale, the garlic, the heat and saltiness is so delicious! I actually served this alongside the Harvest Mood Macaroni, and it was a fine fall feast!

Like beer in cooking. Love kale. Ditto anchovies, garlic and chiles. Thought the slightly bitter ale and bitter kale might be good counterpoint for each other. But outcome was a tad too bitter for our preferences. And we like bitter food (example, rabe. Nice "a ha" was how well nutmeg worked with the other flavors. Very good! Took the lacinato kale much longer to cook than the recipe said for last step. Not a keeper but glad we tried it once. R Ray seems the “queen” of kale recipes; so we’ll preserve to try others.

This was fantastic. I did not have any ale so I just used water and I used red pepper flakes.
