I guess you have to be from the Islands or Hispanic to know how to COOK platains. Microwave is handy but not all foods cooked in it come out good, at least in my house the microwave is only used to warm up food not to cook.
In other words, the platain recipe: A DISASTER.
The steak was good but I used other product to marinate the meat in.

Not only did this recipe take way longer than 30 minutes, the flavor was only okay. Although I followed her recipe exactly, the plantains wouldn't mash well, so I ended up with hard, uncooked plantains. The shrimp came out fairly well. I might add some more heat to it, if I ever decided to make this again. I have to say, overall I was disappointed. But, I don't know why I was that surprised. I've tried several of her recipes and none of them turn out that great. I like some of the other chefs on the food network much better.

I totally messed up the plantain creation (forgot to wrap the plantains in wax paper + they were at different stages of ripeness & thus sweetness...didn't have tomato sauce so used blended diced tomatoes, etc. so I'm not even going to try to rate it HOWEVER I did make the flank steak and it was a hit with my picky picky kids! I then served it at bunco with yuca con mojo, black beans and rice and fried plantains and everyone loved it! The seasoning blend is great and everyone loved the lime and onions on top. I found that a 1.5 - 1.75 flank steak will serve five women amply. Be sure not to overcook it (I grilled mine 4min on each side and slice it against the grain, thinly and diagonally just as Rachael did. DELICIOSO! Will go in my permanent recipe file.

This was a fun meal to cook. It did take me longer than 30 mins, but I got it on the table in less than an hour. It was worth the wait. I have never had flank steak or plantains before. The steak was flavorful and very good. I like the spice mix and the lime juice. The plantains took alot longer to cook in the microwave, about 14 minutes. Maybe the ones I got were bigger or not ripe. They were still a bit underdone, if it was suppose to be like mashed potatoes. It was interesting anyway. I will make this again and maybe tweek the recipe by substituting fresh tomatoes for the tomato sauce and adding a touch more garlic to it, and ofcourse cooking those plantains for 20 mins.
Over all this was a great meal.

This was so much food. I would either fix the steak or the shrimp but not both. It took me about 45 minutes but that is because I have Tivo and I was able to watch the show a couple of times and learn how to make the meal prep more time effecient. Overall easy to make.

I made chips instead of mashed platanos, and served the chips with sea salt and the garlic shrimp and tomatoes like a dip. Everyone LOVED IT!!!!

I normally don't eat steak, but it was delicious. The plantains were not good. The texture was not good, but the shrimp topping was great! I think I will try it with yellow rice or some other starch.

After seeing this episode, I knew that I could not do all these these things at once. I chose to do the shrimp portion and serve it over the black beans and rice. It made a wonderful meal. Very easy and quick on a Friday night before playing taxi mom for the rest of the evening. My daughter had the leftovers for breakfast! My husband said it was one of his top three dinners of all time. Can't wait to try the other parts. Thanks Rachael!!

Loved the flank steak, plantains and rice! Recipes formatted like this are very difficult to isolate and prepare seperately. I felt like I wasted a lot of time trying to pull out the pieces I needed.
