I substituted beer broth and a different wine. It was good but as others have noted it lacked something. It was missing umami as the Japanese say.

Probably a tsp of soy sauce, as others have noted. would be good. For the those unfamilier with it in cooking, soy sauce is a taste enhancer. You won't taste it individually.

The beef, I used surloin steak, needs to be cut thin to prevent the sensation of toughness.

This recipe past the ultimate test in that I will definitely make it again. I did not have consumme (couldnt find any in the store either and just used beef broth. I also used red wine instead of sherry. Overall the taste of the pepper steak wasn't amazing, but its obvious that you need to add some extra spices and seasonings, maybe a little soy sauce. I love this recipe because it was so easy, and had few ingredients.

I saw this recipe on air and decided to try it. My family loved it - the kids scarfed it right up even though it had onions and bell peppers in it. My sister-in-law and my mother-in-law wanted me to make it after they heard my husband RAVING to them about how wonderful it was. They soon fell in love with it and so did my neice and nephew (my nephew is an incredibly picky eater. My parents and brother also heard about it and they wanted to try it and of course, fell in love with it. It is often requested when they come to visit. So, paired with the rice pilaf this is definately a crowd pleaser in my family.

PS I double the recipe and NEVER have any for leftovers!

Just made this again the other night. We love this recipe. Excellent for when the green peppers (or yellow or red start coming in from the garden!

My family loves this recipe. I have made this quite a few times and my super picky husband always eats a huge plate. This recipe comes in handy during the week when I need something quick to put on the table.

"I'm new to the cooking world but have many opinions on how things should taste, so although the recipe was relatively easy to make it missed something in the taste department and the sauce was a bit thin....As i progress in the cooking field I'll figure out whats missing...."

I thought this was o.k. I think it needed something more, though. Being the non-chef that I am, I haven't quite figured out what it is that is lacking. I'm not so sure I really liked the tomato paste...maybe substitute soy sauce instead of the paste. However, it was very easy, especially if you've prepared everything beforehand. I thought it did go well with the rice pilaf and the steak was tender. I'm having it for leftovers today for lunch, so we'll see how it is the next day! If it's better, maybe I'll prepare it the night before and let it sit and eat it the following night!!

This was super tasty - I didn't change a thing. It's funny how I've made Pepper Steak forever and never though to use sherry. Next time a might use a little fresh ginger to give it more of an Oriental flavor.
