I fixed this with Italian turkey sausage and turkey bacon. I used puff pastry on the top instead of potatoes. It was wonderful. The type of sausage I used was very strong with fennel so I'm going to try just plain ground turkey next time. The smokey paprika was 100% flavorful! ! ! I'm going to use it in more recipes! I prepared everything in 30 minutes time but I let it cook longer to soften the carrots just a bit more. I like mine a little on the soft side. I can't wait to have this again. It was a HUGE hit with hubby! He loved the smokey flavor! You ROCK Rachel!

If you like shepherd's pie, you must try this recipe. And please don't worry about the time. If Rachael can finish the dish in 30 min does not mean everybody can do the same. Remember, you are making it first time and looking into the recipe 100 time while making. At the end it is a good recipe.

i try to prep my veggies the night before or earlier in the day if im going to be rushed. this helps with time tremendously. that said this is a delicous version of sheperds pie. i work at an irish pub(owned by people from ireland and they use beef with some red wine dumped in. another great version. cooking should be fun and light hearted not a reason to be rude. many recipes have generic names and many versions. thats ok.

We loved this recipe and I would definitely make it again. It did take me longer than 30 minutes (you have to wait for the veggies to cook! but, it was very taste and pretty easy.....a keeper for us!

I haven't made this yet but when I saw Rachel prepare this recipe on her show I knew I had to try it. A group of friends & I get together once a week for dinner. We all pitch in and bring something. When I saw this, I knew I wanted to bring it to our next get together. Speaking as someone who grew up on Shepard's Pie- who cares that it doesn't have lamb, I personally don't like lamb and I am glad to see a different version. The great thing about Rachel is she takes tried & true recipe and puts a spin on them. If you were paying attention when this episode aired she said you could use a different meat (I am planning to use ground beef she just happened to use turkey. For all the whinny poo poo post, get over yourself. Yes, Rachel may have help preparing these for her show but so what. Even if it takes YOU longer to make this at home then her, deal with it. Remember you are making it for the first time and following a recipe, not something you have made a millions time and could do in your sleep.

This recipe might taste good to those who like turkey - I'm not a turkey lover though, so I changed the meat. However, this site is not just about praising the chefs. If this recipe takes any longer than 30 minutes to cook, and it is shown as a 30 minute meal, should it be scoring 5 stars just because it tastes great? When judging any recipe on any cooking competition, the judges expect stuff to be done timely. She is telling me that this meal takes no longer than 30 minutes to prep, cook and plate, as well as healthy. With all due respect this statement is not true. Also one of the reviewers mentioned that this was not Shepherd's pie, because the main ingredient that gives it its name was omitted. If it is called Shepherd's pie because of the lamb, then not having lamb in it will make it something else, not shepherd's pie. I feel that is a very valid point, if true. I, personally see more problems with people who attack anyone who don't give every recipe 5 stars, than those who try and give constructive criticism. I don't feel that the reviewers are supposed to jump down each other's throats and everyone's opinion should be respected, whether good or bad, and whether or not they agree with us. Regarding the chopping, we all know that RR chops extremely fast, and normal home cooks can't chop as fast as her. So although suggesting to someone to use a food processor is fine, telling them not to whine or give up cooking is unacceptable.

Please stop whining because you don't know how to use a knife or give up cooking. Very simple. Like I said a food processor can slice carrots & celery at tremendous speed. She has great recipes.
