Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
  • 1 1/4 pounds ground beef sirloin
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon steak seasoning blend, such as McCormick brand Montreal Seasoning
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 small red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered
  • Garnish: sliced ripe tomatoes, pickles, Deviled Potato Salad, recipe follows

Directions

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops. Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Deviled Potato Salad. Have plenty of napkins on hand!

Deviled Potato Salad:

5 all-purpose potatoes, peeled and diced

Coarse salt

1/4 onion

3 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard

1/2 cup mayonnaise, eyeball the amount

1 teaspoon sweet paprika

1 teaspoon hot cayenne pepper sauce (recommended: Tabasco or Frank's Red Hot)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 scallions, thinly sliced, for garnish

Boil potatoes in water seasoned with coarse salt until they are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain cooked potatoes and return to the warm pot to dry them out. Let the potatoes stand 2 minutes, then spread potatoes out on to a cookie sheet to quick-cool them.

In the bottom of a medium mixing bowl, grate 1/4 onion using a hand grater. Add mustard and mayonnaise, paprika and cayenne pepper sauce to the grated onion and stir to combine. Add potatoes to the bowl and stir to evenly distribute dressing. Season potato salad with salt and pepper and taste to adjust your seasonings. Top servings of salad with chopped scallions.

    Yummy!

I love this recipe and have made it many times! I never find it too runny, but I do let it cook a little longer at a simmer.... I just like to leave it on low for maybe an extra 15 or 20 minutes and it tastes so good that way! It is just so good!Read more

    MAKE IT!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This recipe is so easy and affordable! You can always double it too ... meaning it will serve another day :) one more night... you don't have to come up with a meal but this recipe I wouldn't mind eating all week. I've never really had a sloppy joe before, I always assumed I wouldn't like them. I don't mind ground beef but it has to have a lot of flavor for me, I don't like the actual taste of the hamburger itself. Therefore eating a big serving of ground beef was never appealing ... I decided to try it and these are delicioussss!!! Great FLAVOR, cannot taste "hamburger" at all, I like the sweetness!! I am not a spicy fan, these were perfect!!! I reccomend this recipe to ANYONE that enjoys sloppy joes!! PS - I added a green pepper as well, just as good!!! Read more

    Made twice this week!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
These are sooooooo good that I've made them twice this week! Make sure you drain the grease from the meat though to get the... right consistency. If you have time, simmer longer for a richer, fuller flavor. Read more

    Delicious!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
I just used a can of tomato sauce which comes out to 1 and 3/4 cups a little less then the recipe. I found the mixture to be... a little too juicy for my taste but, I did not drain the fat from the meat so I will do that next time and see if it is the consistency I like. I also plan to mince the onion and pepper so my picky eaters can't see them. These are the best tasting sloppy joes I have ever tried so from now on this is my go to recipe. I just have to make some slight modifications to get the consistency I like. Taste is fabulous!!!Read more

Just like a sloppy joe should taste! Easy to prepare and great flavor. I might go a bit lighter on the steak seasoning next... time, but these will be the only sloppy joe's I will make from now on.Read more
