After reading the reviews, I : 1 Used high-end crushed tomatoes for the sauce; 2 Added 2 tablespoons of tomato paste to the sauce; 3 Bought both FRESH Genovese pesto and FRESH mozzarella from Trader Joes; 4 used fat free ricotta and 5 I baked the dish for 15 minutes at 375 degrees and then put it under the broiler for 2-3 minutes. Hands down, this was delicious and a real crowd-pleaser! I think high quality ingredients and extra baking in the oven make the difference.

This dish was a hit my house, but didn't have enough sauce so next time I will add more.

For such an easy recipe it really a 5 star but in the grand scheme of things its a 4. My husband liked it so much he had me make a second pan and freeze it for if i go out of town! I loved the layers, cheesy pesto on the very bottom with the WONDERFUL full flavored sauce on the bottom. I added a little romano cheese to the top and I used 1/3 cup dried basil (its all I had on hand and added it to the garlic and onions instead so it wouldn't be woody... Next time I make it, and there will be a next time, Ill make more sauce just because it was soooo good.

I made a couple changes to this recipe but I thought it was really great, I am not sure where the mixed reviews are coming from. First I used homemade pesto, and I also added mild italian sausage. I am not sure how it would have tasted without the meat, but we thought the combo of tomato sause and pesto was really great. Thanks for a good one!

This was just ok for me. Nothing spectacular. The tomato sauce really needs more depth.

I followed the directions exactly, except adding cooked chicken to the tomato sauce. It was really good. Family loved it!

Restaurant worthy! I used my own pesto sauce but otherwise followed directions exactly. The flavor was so fresh and irresistible! I would make this for company. Very impressive.
