I thought this dish was wonderful. Very hearty and satisfying. I would omit the banana and hot sauce from the sweet potatoes next time. Both were interesting flavors, but neither really made the dish for me. I also used 1/2 tsp of ground sage and 1/2 tsp of thyme rather than the poultry seasoning. I will be making this again - no doubt!

This was amazing my husband and I loved it. I substituted a ripe plantain for the banana and it was perfect!

That was absolutely wonderful! I did change a few items as I had them left over from the dinner. I added left over gravy and used vegetable stock for the liquid. My family thought it was Thanksgiving al over again but a one dish meal with all the fixings contained.

I enjoyed this recipe as a new take on shepherd's pie. That she used turkey and sweet potatoes made me feel that I was making a "healthy" choice.
I have made this recipe twice now. Instead of banana, I used brown sugar one time and mini-marshmallows the other.

The first time we made this it came out surprisingly well. I make standard Sheppard?s pie all the time and this was a nice healthy alternative.
The banana was fine and made the dish. It added a slightly sweeter taste to the already sweet potatoes.
How can you not like Cheese? Cheese and potatos? You never heard of cheese frys, baked potato with cheese? Now I can't have it without cheese! The second time we made it , it was even better. Just make the dish exactly, and learn how to cook. haha Thank You Rachael Ray.

Banana was NOT a good addition and cheese didn't compliment the potato-banana mixture AT ALL.

Rachel Ray is the grad students best friend. Her recipes are usually easy to follow , tasty, and healthy. I just tried this recipe and it the it tastes great. Those of you complaining about the banana I can see what you're saying, but it might depend on the size. Cause I used a small banana and the taste of fruit isn't all that overwhelming. Where as if you use a huge one, then chances are you're not going to be happy, that and you probably have to mash it up really well. Regardless I like this recipe, I'm thinking of cooking it more often even for some potlucks.

Aside from that, my gravy wasn't thick enough after following the instructions. Was this the case for everyone else? Or is there some thing I did wrong or that I should do if I want my gravy to be thicker? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I thought this was delicious! But as others have commented, the recipe seemed incomplete, and since I did not watch the episode, I was left to doing a lot of guess work. I assumed -- based on another review -- that the gravy is supposed to be mixed in with the meat and vegetables, so that's what I did, but used only about half of the gravy recipe and that seemed to work well. I also used the yellow type of sweet potato, although I think yams (which some call sweet potatoes would work too. Wish I knew which kind Rachel used. And I used cut-up leftover turkey instead of ground turkey. I used only half a banana, based on previous reviews, and would recommend not using anymore than that. And I liked the melted cheese on top, even though most reviewers recommended leaving it out. The recipe is fairly labor-intensive, but worth it!

I roasted and shredded a turkey breast instead of using ground turkey and I did not use the banana in the sweet potatoes. I also used the drippings from the turkey breast for the gravy. Make sure you buy bone in and skin on breasts, roast until internal temp is 165. Was a HUGE hit in my family.
