This stew was not that good. The flavor of rosemary and cumin didn't mix well with the stew, and the garbanzo beans seemed really out of place. The potato pancakes were ok, but I would recommend cooking them in vegetable oil and not olive oil.

I made this the other night thinking it would be a quick week-night meal. While it turned out tasting fantastic, it took over an hour from start to finish. This is definitely not a 30 minute meal.

I never thought I was a particularly slow chopper... who can honestly say that they can chop 1 pound of mushrooms, 1 zucchini, 1 onion and then peel and grate 8oz of cheese, 2 pounds of potatoes and another onion in just 10 minutes? The prep time here is more like 20 - 30 minutes.

I usually have a tough time frying things (I don't think my pans are really well suited to it and these were no exception. They either stuck to the bottom or were undercooked, but those that did come out tasted great with the stew on top. The cumin really makes this dish if you ask me (and I was very generous with the salt/pep too.

I loved the stew and of course the potatoe pancakes were as everyone said delicious. You really do need a non stick skillet for the potatoe pancakes. I would like to make this for company as it is easy and delicious but it doesn't plate up very pretty. My husband said it looked awful and was really surprised when it tasted soooo good!

I like RR's ideas, but I've had problems with this and other recipes of hers. The potato pancakes are good. I might make them again someday. The stew was not good. The vegetables by themselves with some different spice may have been ok, but the rosemary is way too strong to pair with the vegetables. The flavor completely drowned out every other flavor and didn't go well with the pancakes. We threw it out.

After reading all the reviews, I went ahead and made a double batch. What a mistake! There was very little flavor. My husband didn't even eat a full serving. I only managed because I was incredibly hungry. Luckily, I managed to salvage it by adding a bunch of different ingredients and calling it chili. Also, serving the stew over the potato pancakes makes them soggy. If I ever serve a stew with potato pancakes again, I'll serve them separately to keep the crisp texture of the pancakes.

I love this recipe and make it several times every fall/winter. I like meat and chunk up some Italian sausage, brown it separately then add it to the stew and it is absolutely YUM-O. It is a very healthful meal (without the sausage yet filling. DELICIOUS!

I love this recipe. Go for the smoked Gouda for the potato pancakes. Other cheeses don't give the same blend of flavors.

I've made this several times now on the stove top. But today I prepared it in the Crock Pot. It turned out great. I left out EVOO since I didn't saute the mushrooms. It turned out great.

This is a very satisfying meal!

I prepared the recipe exactely as direct but the results just weren't good. Not the best choice of seasonings in my opinion. I'll never prepare this recipie again.

Wow...YUM-O!! I really was hesitant to try this, thinking the potato cakes would be uncooked in the amount of time indicated and the cheese would just spread into a mess. Boy was I wrong!! They were perfect! The flavors were wonderful, I only changed adding some cayenne and using my own oven roasted tomatoes I had frozen over the summer. Thanks Rach, absolutely easy and wonderful.

I like my food on the spicy side...so by adding a little chili pepper or hot sauce makes this stew perfect; healthy and tasty!
