I tried making 1/2 of the icing and it was very liquidy. I had to add a lot of powdered sugar to thicken it up. I'm not sure what went wrong. Can someone help?

    MOST DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE CAKE EVER!!
Making this again for my son's birthday. It is so light and scrumptious. If it were made with buttercream it would be extremely heavy. Make it just as is and you won't be disappointed!! I even used chocolate chips for the frosting with terrific results. Thanks for another great recipe Ree!!

This chocolate cake was beyond delicious. I'm not a baker. But I was inspired to try this cake after watching the episode. What caught my attention was the fact that no mixer was needed. I thought HHmmm. I can do this. My family and friends enjoyed it!!! I will definitely be making this again. If you love chocolate, and who doesn't; then I encourage you to try this recipe. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Ree!! Oh yeah, thanks to Ladd too! If it had not been your birthday, don't know if I would have had the pleasure of enjoying this wonderfully delicious cake!!

This cake will beat anything anyone has out there hands down. I made it for my husband's birthday on July 4. It turned out exactly as shown and the taste and flavor were to die for. I took it to a cookout and they thought I had bought it somewhere. I made the chocolate curls and everything. Thank you Reed. I love your show.

This cake was amazing!!! I made the 4 layers but only used 3 it was so tall. It was very, very rich. I am not a big sweet eater so this cake was perfect. Even though you put 4 cups of sugar in the batter, you don't taste it in the cake. My daughter in law loved it so much that while I was frosting it, most of the 4th layer that was on the counter disappeared. I looked up and half of the unfrosted 4th layer was gone and she had a fork in her hand with a guilty grin on her face. Then she took some of the finished cake home too. My family and co-workers loved it!! Thank you Ree and I love your show!!!

I loved this recipe. It was easy, delicious and so impressive looking when done. I got about 20 slices out of this cake. I did make the cakes a day ahead and when completely cooled, wrapped each one separately in saran wrap to keep fresh and moist. The next day, bday day, I made the frosting. You do need to completely chill the mixture before whipping. Once chilled, add vanilla and whip like you would a whipped cream. It came out so nice and fluffy. Since the cakes were cooled over night, the icing when on so evenly and thick, without the cakes slipping around. My go to special occassion cake!!

I would like to begin by saying everything I've tried of Ree's in the past has been amazing. That being said, I found this recipe lacking. Although the cake is very moist and tender, the chocolate flavor isn't as intense as I would have liked, and I even used coffee instead of water. It was more like a red velvet cake flavor. The frosting was good, but I would have preferred a chocolate buttercream to offset the blandness of the cake, or a regular ganache used as frosting. I'm sad this cake didn't do it for me!
