Wow I really picked on a wonderful cake, to make for my first ever from scratch cake. I will make this one again it is so moist, and the flavor just bursts in your mouth. But I made my old stand by frosting I like so much.

Great cake. Gave it 4 stars because I made the cake 2 days in advance and the cake was a bit dry. But everyone loved it, said it tasted like a big devil dog. But I did put a layer of cool whip in the center of the cake with a thin layer of the chocolate frosting. I loved the frosting, different and tasty, very homemade looking. But realize this is not a smooth frosting.

I put myself on the spot and made this cake the morning of my daughter's birthday party, and it was a success! I used Toll House semi-sweet morsels with the cream in the frosting and it was perfectly sweet enough. I grew up on Toll House cookies so for any chocolate snobs out there, and I can be one of those, sorry! Everyone loved it. Four layers is very impressive, very tall, and we needed over-sized plates. We added strawberries and vanilla ice cream. I've been giving it away to everyone and there is still a lot left. Delish.

Best CHOCOLATE fix ever!!! Whoa! Just made it and had a slice - couldn't finish my slice because it was so chocolaty! Wow! Easy to make! (think I over mixed the frosting but I added some heavy whipping cream and it smoothed out.

This is an awesome cake. I 1/2'd this recipe. My hubby and 3 boys love chocolate cake. I hate the boxes, I don't know whats in them. I like to make things from scratch so I know what is in the food we eat. I used dark cocoa and 60% cacao chocolate pieces for the frosting. I definitely need to add, some sugar to frosting. Awesome Dark Chocolate Cake Ree. This is now my kids new birthday cake. They all told me, this is our go to cake from now on.
I love your recipes, keep em comin' :

I made this cake after seeing it on TV but I divided recipe in 1/2 and it became a normal sized cake. I use my own buttercream frosting, but the cake was out of this world. Especially loved the NO-MIX bonus! making tomorriow with a light fluffy peanutbutter frosting for my sons 12th bday party

Wow, what a cake! I made this today for a family dinner and it was a HUGE hit! I will say that it was VERY time consuming but well worth the effort. We were all fascinated with the height of the cake, even took pictures of it beside a ruler!! The cake and frosting was very rich, but not overly sweet. I would have preferred the cake with a buttercream frosting but all of my family was in love with the chocolate frosting. We all ate a piece, sent seven pieces out to neigbors, and still have 1/4 of the cake left. I didn't have any problems with the consistency of the frosting like a previous poster, but I did let mine cool completely in the fridge beforehand. Will make this cake again but only when I'm expecting a crowd!

Made this for my new son-in-law's birthday. Everyone loved it but I cut the pieces way too big. With four layers, smallish slices are perfectly satisfying. I usually make a buttercream frosting but wanted to try this one. It was delicious but I had trouble getting it to be the right consistency to stay on the cake. Maybe I didn't chill it enough before using the mixer? Anyway, I added lots of confectioners sugar and it still wasn't very firm. After frosting I kept the cake in the fridge until shortly before serving. I will be making it again and often! Thanks, Ree! I love your show!

Frosting: This frosting recipe was so easy but it was not sweet at all (too bitter for my kids- if I make it again I will def. add sugar to the cream when heating it.
