I followed the recipe exactly and I liked (as well as 5 of my friends who were over the fact that the cookies weren't overly sweet on the end without the icing because it complemented the sweet side of the cookie well. I even had a girl on a diet who wouldn't stop eating them. I did have a problem with getting the icing and sprinkles too heavy on one side and the cookie breaking.

I too thought these were a little dry and I did follow the directions very carefully. The dough was very easy to work with and the cookies look very pretty. Next time I will frost the whole cookie just to add a little more sweetness.

This is a dry cookie and I agree a bit too salty. Next time I will follow the suggestion I just read about using the Unsalted butter.

The negative reviews are misleading. I made this exactly as the recipe states (except I used UNsalted butter and these were the best chocolate roll-out cookies I've ever made. They were easy to make and I had no trouble with the baking temperature or with them being "dry". There is no need to make any changes to this recipe to avoid a dry cookie, just don't pack down your flour or cocoa powder when measuring and you shouldn't have any problems. If you want a softer cookie, roll your dough out a little thicker. These were plenty sweet especially after being dipped in chocolate but you could make them even sweeter by topping them with a powdered sugar glaze or even a buttercream frosting.

This recipe was fantastic; the cookie dough is fantastic, the taste of natural chocolate, not overly sweet more satisfying flavor. These were a hit at my house on valentine day. The excitement of putting your own type of various toppings is and was a hit. We'll make again. Thanks so much for posting.

Not very sweet, but with topping they were pretty good. My family and coworkers enjoyed them. The dough was easy to work with. I used a heart shape cookie cutter and instead of dipping I drizzled semi sweet chocolate over the tops and then sprinkled with crushed almond toffee. Nice presentation.

I just love this cookie. I have been looking for a chocolate cookie for so long and finally found it. I made them last night for Valentines Day. I made heart shapes decorated with the same toppings Ree used. They were a hit with my family and I have a new favorite cookie.

The cookies were not the best chocolate cookies I have ever had, but they weren't the worst either. They were a little dry and not very sweet. You will definitely want to use the lower cooking time so the cookies don't get too dried out! That being said, the taste was greatly improved once dipped in chocolate and toppings. My kids liked them, and I didn't mind eating one myself. The dough was easy to make and easy to roll and cut. It was a fun treat to make with the kids, since they loved all the different topping options. They were good, just not excellent.

Based on the reviews saying the cookie was dry, I made a couple changes to the recipe. I used granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup less flour. I also used unsalted butter because that's what I had. I baked at 350 degrees until just set (about 11 minutes then I let the cookies sit for a few more minutes on the cookie sheet to finish setting up. They taste good. Very chocolately.
