I don't see why this cake calls for so much butter. It is a waste of time and money. I tried it, and it was greasy, and had a strange flavor. There are so many other great, easy cake recipes out there worth trying.

For those looking for more cupcake "instructions" I really don't think this recipe would work as cupcakes as it doesn't rise much. That is why it is baked in a sheet pan. Only 1 tsp. of baking soda and no baking powder will not really produce high, fluffy cupcakes. Find another recipe.

What a disappointment. Based on the original reviews I actually baked this without a taste test before I served it. So embarrassed!!!
    Overall greasy chocolate cake.

Although I cut down on the powder sugar in the icing, that is just my personal preference, I think the cake is great! It is easy preparation, tastes great, and is always a crowd pleaser! Thanks Ree!So happy you are now on Food TV Network!

The recipe falls short of being good or acceptable. Unfornately, I agree with those who not only fault the recipe, which I've tried, but also fault it for originality.

Tried it since this recipe is not new to PW and it needs to go back to the drawing board and the original recipe because this one falls very flat.

This cake is better than The Texas Sheet Cake recipe. I don't add cinnamon and we all love it. I'm a cinnamon person, but not in my chocolate cake. This recipe and the frosting is a huge success with crowds. Example: For a funeral luncheon I made two sheet cakes. Large crowd! One was Ree's recipe and the other was The Texas Sheet Cake recipe (mine doesn't have cinnamon in the recipe. The Texas Sheet Cake was left over. It wasn't as moist as Ree's and the frosting for the Texas Sheet Cake was much sweeter and didn't go over well. Thank you, Ree, for this cake recipe. Love, Love, Love your show and seeing the family included.

This cake was was popular when I was a young mother. I have been making it for over 40 years, and the 1 tsp. cinnamon has been left out at the expense of finished cake. The cake is called Texas Sheet Cake, or sometimes Mexican Sheet Cake. It is delicious when it is made by the ORIGINAL author's version. The cinnamon makes it a unique flavor, and an important ingredient. Why the extra added salt? It isn't needed. The buttermilk is high in sodium (salt, as well as the added baking soda. The original called for a stick of margarine and 1/2 cup of shortening (not butter. The shortening gives a lighter and more cake like texture (the shortening of the gluten strands. This is not a great rework the original. I have the original handwritten on aged yellowed paper.

This is NOT the same as classic Texas sheet cake. This recipe has too much butter or something, because it's greasy-tasting. There are a lot of similar recipes out there, but this was my least favorite version.

Have had this recipe from PioneerWoman for years and have made it many times. It is truly the best chocolate cake ever!
