I've made this cake several times using the recipe from the PW cookbook and it's always a winner! Super easy to make. Just make sure to spread the frosting evenly over the cake. It sets up really nice after about a half hour. I'm making it again for our block party this year. Yum!

This is the first recipe I tried from the Pioneer Woman's cookbook. My son was thrilled to be helping, as he likes chocolate cake as much as I do. It smelled great during the baking. The icing was mind-numbingly sweet. Painful. We soldiered on, hoping for the best. Keep in mind, I have a pack of super-charged active men that are able to scarf down an entire cake in seconds flat. I served it up for dessert that Sunday evening, and I have to tell you that it was the greasiest, gummiest cake I had ever tried. I've tried a lot of cake in my life. My son took one bite and asked to be excused from the table. There were tears in my eyes as I threw it all away the next morning. What a waste!

This is nearly identical to a recipe that I've been making for almost 40 years. When I saw this recipe I decided to make it incorrectly assuming that it was identical to the one I've used. The cake was almost soggy. I compared this recipe to mine and there's 3/4 stick more butter in the frosting in this one than in mine. Unfortunately, that extra butter makes the cake a failure.

Also, she says that cupcakes can be made, but gives no instructions for how long to bake them.

This is a wonderful recipe. I have been making it for years and have always called it Texas Hot Chocolate Cake. It is so popular in our family (18 kids and grandkids that it is almost always requested for birthdays, barbeques etc. When the little ones request it, I put the cake in two 8x8 pans and give it to them. They get to eat it all by themselves......you should see them take a fork and dig into it..........truly enjoyable !!!

This is almost word-for-word the same as the Gertrude Armstrong's Chocolate Cake my mother has made for the last fifty years or so. There is nothing in the world better. If Ree keeps pumping out recipes like this, she will be my new best friend!

Everyone loves this cake. I've been making this since I first found the Pioneer Woman's website. I do a couple things differently but they are slight variations: 1- I roast my pecans beforehand. and 2- I use dark cocoa powder instead of traditional.

This cake, either way, is rich, delicious and people ALWAYS ask for seconds--- or thirds!

If you're out of buttermilk you can just use real milk with a couple teaspoons of vinegar added. Not quite as good but it works with skim milk and lactose free milk!

This is one of my favorite recipes and I bought sheet pans JUST to make it! Thanks Ree!
