This recipe is from the back of the German Chocolate Cake mix box! I've been making these caramel brownies for years. They are delicious, just surprised to see them featured on a food network show. Use caramel sauce instead of the packaged caramels... you won't need to add the milk. It is a heck of a lot faster than peeling all of those darn candy wrappers!

I made the whole caramel thing easier by just boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk for 3 hours. It was just enough to cover the brownies. I boiled mine the day before and kept it in the fridge until I was ready to make the brownies next day. Loved these brownies! I also used cashews instead of pecans, since that is what I had on hand.

These brownies are nothing short of sheer genius. They are amazing! I brought them into work at 8:30am and they were gone by 9! I agree with other reviewers about the caramels- mine took over 20 minutes to melt so while the 2nd half of batter was sitting it got very difficult to work with when it was time to shape and put on top. I would definitely melt the caramels before mixing the cake. LOVE

Awesome brownies..TIP..when your shaping into a square use wax paper and a small glass to help to spead out for the first and second layers. Allow extra time for the caramels to melt on the stove..it took about 25 mins. for me

Great recipe but I sure would recommend melting those caramels before beginning the the cake portion.

These are the BEST brownies ever! I made a batch this past weekend for a goodie basket I was making for teacher appreciation week this week. I had some left over, and brought them to work - they were gobbled up in no time! Everyone loved them -- thanks so much for sharing the recipe Ree! :

My husband and I both loved this recipe. I made them over the weekend after watching the show and had to share the recipe with my co-workers Monday morning. Of course, the brownies were so good, I couldn't bring them in to share..... had to make sure we had some at home to have for dessert tonight.

I dont know how I got it in my head but I thought the recipe called for devils food cake mix. Well thats what I had and thats what I used and they were spectacular still. Best recipe ever and what makes it so good is that its egg free (we have egg allergies in our family so everybody was able to partake and enjoy these brownies. We also have soy allergies....I'm wondering if I can turn these into a blondie recipe. Hmmmmm....food for thought. Gonna work on it.
