This cornbread recipe is excellent and will be my "go to" from now on. I will add 2 tbs sugar next time. After it was baked I spread butter all over the top before slicing. Each person put more butter on their individual pieces. We tried it with a little honey and it was really good!

I grew up down south with a cornbread recipe very similar to this. The only difference being that we fry up bacon in the iron skillet that we will bake the cornbread in. When the bacon is crisp remove from iron skillet BUT Leave The Bacon Grease In The Skillet! Allow bacon to cool enough to crumble and add to batter (sometimes we add shredded cheddar and chopped jalapenos as well Reheat bacon grease that's in the skillet. I know, I know, very bad for you but ohh soo delish. Roll the grease around to coat sides of the skillet. Skillet and grease should be hot and sizzle when you pour your cornbread batter in. Spread the batter around to evenly distribute. Transfer to the oven and bake. YUM!

Oh, this is great with the beans. If you're looking for sweet sugary "corn bread", this isn't it. This is the real deal. I going to make the next one with bacon fat.

Will never make another cornbread again! This was fabulous. I even messed up and put twice the baking soda I was supposed to and forgot to stir in the melted shortening into the batter until it was already in the pan, and it still turned out wonderful. I love the crunchy crust and it is SO moist!! I did add 2 tbs of sugar to the mix. Just perfect...

This was seriously the best cornbread I've ever eaten. I've tried a few other recipes and they're always too dry. This was crunchy, corny, and salty - perfect compliment to the beans! SO glad I tried this recipe! It's a keeper! Thanks Ree :
