This recipe was in the first cookbook I ever bought for myself, back in the sixties when I was 11 or 12 years old. I started cooking for the family when I was in high school and I began using this recipe for my Christmas roast and pud. It's simply wonderful. Don't be afraid of the spices, they only add a subtle warm flavour to the meat. I moved to London in my twenties, and began making it for my English friends, who raved. It's also the best Yorkshire pudding recipe I've ever come across--it even puffs up again if you need to stick it back into the oven. (The trick is to get the pan with the drippings (or you can use regular oil if you don't want to use drippings very, very hot before you pour in the batter. It should sizzle.

Try it. You won't be disappointed.
