Just tried this recipe for the first time. The batter was light and crispy, however if you like very seasoned food the fish would be extremely bland. I actually seasoned my fish a little more than just with salt and pepper and used peaches instead of mandarin oranges with a little more seasoning as well served on a bed of pelaf or rice and peas which i made with 3 different types of peas... results? Deeelicious!!

Did not make the chili and ornage sauce, sounded gross, so I served w/homemade tarter sauce...batter was crispy and light and stuck to the fish, I only hade a dark beer and the flavor was great. Husband likes SPICY so for some of the fish added cajun seasoning mix with the flour before dipping and he LOVED it. Served with Ina's "chips" for a fun meal that got the kids eating "real fish" not those frozen things, thanks for the GREAT and versatile recipe.
PS-also worked on onion rings and they came out even better than the fish!!

I cooked this recipe for my family one night and it was very well received. The batter was light and crisp and was the perfect consistantcy for even coating. I also made the chili sauce, which is more of a pure liquid accompaniment than a traditional sauce. The mandarins were picked off by most, but I supose they would be a great sweet pairing if you choose to put a lot of the chili sauce on. All and all, a great dish.

I don't enjoy greasy fried anything but I caught the end of this episode and thought the sauce sounded great so I decided to try it using no more oil that necessary and it was amazing. The fish had an excellent crunch and the sauce had so much flavor. Like other readers I coul not find chili paste so I used hot chili sauce which gave it a nice kick.

We made this dish last night along with Robin's Asian Broccoli Slaw on the side. WOW. This was so flavorful. We couldn't find the chili paste so we used tomato paste with a little chili powder. I doubt it seriously altered the recipe. My wife and I will definately make this recipe again and it wasn't all that much of a budget buster. Now we have a few of the ingredients for future meals. My wife and I are new to Robin Miller's cookbooks and show but we are definately fans. I first found "Quick Fix Meals" at the library and made a list of over 30 recipes that sound good (most cookbooks might yield 3-4 decent recipes so I bought the book through Amazon for a couple bucks. This recipe is totally amazing! Wasn't there a commercial that boasted, "Try it, You'll Like it?"

I make a lot of different fish recipes and I have to say this one wasn't going to be a keeper. The beer batter was not very good...too heavy for such a light fish and the red chile mandarin orange sauce was a terrible combination with the cilantro. We only tasted the sauce so to keep the fish from being ruined. Like I said we cook a lot! If you have any idea of what good food is stay away from this recipe.

I do not eat seafood at all, but my husband loves it. I've always wanted to do a beer battered fish for him. I am so glad I picked this recipe. I scored major brownie points, so I hope no one let's on how easy it was!!!!!!!!!!!!! We did not use the sauce, just the fish.

Yesterday, I made this dish for a second time. This time I didn't have a jar of mandarin oranges but discovered that fresh, chopped clementines are a great substitute. My family raved about this dish both times!

We really like talapia at our house, but I am always looking for new recipes. I
made this super simple recipe tonight and loved it. I found the chili sauce in the Chinese section at my supermarket. The fish was so light and flaky, complimented by the tangy sauce and the sweetness of the oranges. Hubby says I can make it again, and I most certainly will.

Family and friends loved this recipe. Had trouble finding the Red Chili Paste in my area - used a red chili sauce. If anyone knows where to find the red chili paste please advise. Thanks
