This cake is fabulous. It has a great texture and moisture level. This is the first cake that I have ever made from scratch and it was EASY! It is moist, rich, wonderfully chocolate. I have made it 4 times now. The only ingredient that I don't normally keep on hand is the buttermilk, but now I do :

This recipe for chocolate cake had a baking time that was way off. It is hard to get it evenly cooked, but it looks good and tastes good too!!!

I have been a cake baker for a very long time and this recipe was one of my least favorites. Although the flavor was decent (of course since it is chocolate, but the texture was very gummy. It was also difficult to get evenly cooked through. I liked that it was easy to toss all ingredients in together, unlike most cakes. This recipe was a disappointment for me.

I've lost track of how many times I've made this recipe... it's that good! I just brought it to work today for a coworkers birthday and everyone raved and raved about it and asked for the recipe. I live at high altitude and this cake does need to be cooked a tad longer than 25 minutes in my oven (about 30 to 32 mintues total. For those who reviewed this recipe and thought the baking time was way off, I've found that if your oven is preheated to 350 degrees for about 10 minutes before you even think of putting the cake in the oven... it makes a difference. I put my cake in the oven last night the minute the oven "beeped" to tell me it was preheated and my cake did take a bit longer to bake. Also, I never buy fresh buttermilk. Instead, I keep a canister of dry buttermilk powder in my fridge... just for this recipe. You find it in the grocerty store by the powdered milk. Just add 5 tablespoons of the buttermilk powder to the dry ingredients and then add 1 1/4 cups water to the wet ingredients (in place of the buttermilk and then you still need to add the 1 cup boiling water later as the recipe describes. Love this recipe. It's very moist, but I do enjoy it with frosting made from butter, cocoa powder, vanilla, milk and powdered sugar!

I have never made a cake with buttermilk, and I guess I was expecting something heavy like old fashioned buttermilk donuts-even though this is chocolate. :
I just got through eating a warm piece of this freshly baked cake, and it was really good. I like the slight tangy aftertaste and the slight spice from the cinnamon I added. I am out of instant coffee so I was unable to add it, as I always do to anything I make that is chocolate. Next time, I will add the coffee, and perhaps another layer of chocolate to the ingredients.
This cake was super easy; it's a one bowl recipe!

I've made this cake so many times and finally decided to experiment with some changes and they turned out great! I substituted the 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour for 1 3/4 cups plus 3 1/2 TBSP cake flour, reduced the cocoa from 3/4 cup to 1/2 cup, added a 3.9 oz. package of Chocolate Fudge Instant Pudding (you could use any chocolate flavored pudding, used 2 Extra Large eggs instead of Large, and baked it for 30 minutes. The pudding really helps ramp up the chocolate flavor!!!! My daughter and her friend said it is the best chocolate cake they ever had!! Next time I'm going to try egg substitute instead of eggs!

Whenever I need to make a chocolate cake for myself or for an occasion, this is the one I always choose because I can count on it being absolutely delicious. Easy to make. The buttermilk makes it seem alot more fattening that it really is...so rich.

This cake is the most easy to make and the most tasteful and moist chocolate cake ever. I added my own touch to it which is half a pack of chocolate chips and it turned out sooo chocolaty and perfect. I highly recommend this recipe.

I always like to read the comments posted before I try a recipe. Half liked this cake and half didn't. I tried it and followed the recipe exactly. It came out very good. We thought it had a good taste, was moist, and was easy to make. The only thing that my family did request the NEXT time I make this, is to make a frosting to go along with it (they are frosting people anyway. I also thought about putting an instant pudding mix in it too. If you have tried that, please let me know.
