This is an easy dish to prepare with one exception...peeling an acorn squash is next to impossible (even taking one of the previous reviewer's instructions into consideration. After using a cleaver, hitting it with a hammer to cut it in half, I gave up. Instead, after cutting and seeding and attempting to peel a few pieces, I decided to put the squash in the slow cooker with the peel on. Then, looking at the picture, I see bits of green! indicating that it wasn't peeled after all.
With this exception, it is a tasty dish, especially the second time around, when the veggies and chicken have sat in the juices longer.
All this to say, please remove the word "peeled" in the preparation of the acorn squash!

I have no idea why this recipe has a low overall rating. It is so easy to make and was delicious. A perfect fall slow cooker meal. I read all the reviews and made these small changes...Instead of acorn squash I used a butternut squash (I would use a smaller one next time. I found a link on YouTube.com on "the best way to peel a butternut squash" and it literally took me 5 min. Also, I used 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts and could have even used 5 next time. Instead of the marmalade, I used apricot preserves. I also just did 2 TBSP of maple syrup b/c we didn't have hoisin sauce on hand, and 1 cup of chicken broth instead of 1/2c (it made the dish have more "sauce" but I wanted that. I cooked on High for 4 hours and the chicken was super tender, the flavor was delicious and I will definitely make again!

I took a hint from one of the comments on this page & moved the chicken to the bottom of the slow-cooker after the 1st hour of cooking. The chicken was probably more moist than it otherwise would have been, but we still found it a bit dry. I don't know if a different kind of meat would work better in this recipe, but we did not like the chicken part of it overall (I'm not a big meat eater or meat cooker, so I don't know if something would be a better, more moist substitute..
I disagree with the 'too-sweet flavor' comments. I'll admit that I do like very sweet things, but my husband does not, and he told me he did not think the dish was too sweet at all.
As for the acorn squash, I found that to be a waste of time. It was WAY too hard to peel because of the ridges & too hard to cut because of the hardness of the vegetable itself. The next time I make this, I'll just substitute a few more sweet potatoes. (By the way, my husband NEVER eats sweet potatoes, but I love them... He devoured them in this recipe!
I did not add the leeks because I do not like oniony flavors (I'm pregnant right now, and have even more of an onion aversion than normal, so I added an extra sweet potato to bulk it up.
I also did not add the garnish, both to save money and because my husband & I agree that the herbs on top don't really add much for us.
I served this over brown rice, which soaked up the delicious orange sauce. I might even make this again in a vegetarian way... maybe add a few different kinds of veggies & forgo the meat altogether!
We enjoyed the unique flavor of this dish, and aside from peeling & cutting the squash, it was simple to make! Good luck!

This is something different with chicken, full of flavor, excellent for Fall! Have a couple of friends over to enjoy a delicious autumn meal and afterwards, celebrate the season with wine by an outdoor fire pit...Life is good!!!

I was very skeptical about making this dish due to the overwhelming negative response. But, I looked at it as a challenge. I changed the recipe a bit to offset some of the negative things I was reading. And another thing was that I didn't use a slow cooker. Just a big pot with everything in it on medium heat.
I omited the acorn squash and leeks. Instead using just one sweet onion, chopped. I also used a little more hoisin sauce and chicken broth than the recipe called for.
The chicken was moist and the sweet potato had a perfect consistancy.
I will probably continue to use this recipe and play around with it more. But overall it was a hit with the family.

I thought the recipe was great, the chicken was most, and had the perfect flavors, I love cooking with the slow cooker everything turns out tender and moist and has lots of flavor. I cooked it on high for 4 hours. Excellent.

The chicken was moist, but did not have any flavor maybe because all the sauce was in the bottom of the cooker with the vegetables. We did not enjoy this dish and I will not make again.

Honestly after reading all the reviews I wondered if I should indeed make this dish. But since I liked all the ingredients it called for, I decided to go ahead and take the risk. I must say that the only change I made was to omit the o.j. and add an extra 1/2 cup of chicken broth. I cooked it on high for 4 hours in the crockpot, and everything turned out absolutely delicious! I could not believe how tender the chicken was and how tasty all the veggies were. It was my first time making a dish with leeks, and I was so pleased. If you are like me and want to try this dish because of the wonderful veggies it calls for, go ahead. Hopefully you will be just as pleased and amazed as I was. My family enjoyed it, too!

All the ingredients sounded great but the outcome was 'too sweet' and 'not very attractive'. My daughter's face with the first bite was priceless! Will not make again.

I made this recipe exactly as it is stated and no one in my family could eat it. The flavors did not mix well and nothing tasted good. We are well rounded eaters and are always finding new recipes (most of which we are VERY happy with This one did not live up to the expectation.
