I made this for my husband. It turned out wonderfully! It took about 1 1/2 hours to reduce to a syrup consistency. I knew it was there when I took the spoon out after stirring and the residual liquid began to form a syrup on the spoon.

I used the exact measurements from the recipe, but made whipped cream from whipping cream. I also was not able to find root beer hard candies, but I found root beer jelly beans. I added two on top with the cherry. So cute!

The syrup almost became candy when mixed with the ice cream. I will definitely take the time to do this again!

I think the problem that the other reviewers may have had with the root beer not turning to syrup was that it took a very long time to happen. I had to cook it for more than twice as long as the recipe said but it was well worth it. It made a fabulous sauce that is so unusual, delicious, and definitely different than anything you can buy in the store. If you have the time to put into this, I highly recommend it!!

I love rootbeer, ice cream and everything that Sandra Lee does. Even had I read the other reviews on this recipe I would've still tried it for myself, and as reviewed here, it didn't turn to syrup. I'm only out 3 cans of rootbeer, some sugar and 45 mins on a lazy sunday, but Sandra what happened on this one? I'll resort to a good ol fashioned rootbeer float and call it a day. Sandra, I still love ya, but this recipe needs to be scrapped.

I thought maybe I would give this recipe a try, the average rating was three-it might work.
The sauce didn't work at all, it was a waste of time, product, and effort. You're better off with an old fashioned root beer float.

I was soooo excited to make this for my nephews birthday. What a let down! The "syrup" was a total bust. Please don't waste your time. It's a fun idea but I guess I'll have to come up with my own recipe. Needless to say I had to run to the grocery store at the last minute to get chocolate syrup and missed dinner.

The flavor was good, however the rootbeer & sugar never made a syrup. I doubled the sugar and still didn't work. Next time I would try to use the simple syrup ratio...just a thought. I also used real whipped cream, yum much better than Cool Whip!
