I made this last night as a main course for my Valentine's dinner. It was so perfect, my husband really liked it. I too made a roux of flour and water and added it to thicken up the juice a bit. The stew has a rich full flavor that most guys will like. I had some warm rolls and a small salad with it. I bet that the flavor will even be better with the leftovers, as it maked a pretty big batch.

This is just the best ! The chocolate really adds depth of flavor. I did make a few adjustments:
I added 1 large bay leaf, 1/2 cup strong, black coffee (goes well with the chocolate and just a bit of fresh ground nutmeg (not much-this is a strong spice and one tablespoon of worcestershire sauce. Way to go Sandra Lee !!!

I made this recipe today, skipped browning the meat because I was in a rush, just mixed 2 Tblsp of flour in with the beef broth and used fresh carrots and oh how wonderful my house smelled when I walked in. i was skeptical about the bittersweet chocolate but after the reviews I had to try it. I had bittersweet chocolate chips in the pantry so I used a heaping Tblsp as I didn't feel like grating them. This stew is magnificent you can't taste the chocolate but it adds a depth that is divine. I have to say one of the best, if not the best, I have ever made and tasted. My husband loved it and the kids devoured it> Thank you Sandra

I tried this recipe because there was one review that said "their pickest eaters loved it". This is hands down the best beef stew I have ever made. The only thing I changed was added one more can of beef broth to add more liquid. Loved, loved, loved it! I picked out the most tender stew meat too! Great recipe for all those meat and potatoe lovers. I have never tried leeks, but we are a garlic and onion family. I will use leeks a lot more often for the wonderful, mild onion flavor. I served it with Ciabatta rolls to dip. Thanks Sandra!!!

Best stew recipe that I've tried. Everyone in the family loves it, even the picky children. The only thing I do different is added celery. Awesome :

I do not understand the lone reviewer that said this dish was "ho-hum". That little bit of chocolate changes EVERYTHING. I am thinking that perhaps they left it out and won't admit to it. This is by far THE MOST AMAZING BEEF STEW I HAVE EVER TASTED and Hubby agrees. I am Hungarian, so I KNOW beef stew. The recipe is easy to follow, throw the stuff in a crockpot at bedtime or in the AM before you leave for work/school/whathaveyou and viola! ...the crockpot does all the work and YOU get all the kudos! :o

I never liked beef stew because of the blandness of grey gravy. Not any more. The chocolate, seasonings, tomato and wine are perfect. The color and aroma draw you in. I just bake a few Pilsbury Grands right before serving and its a complete meal that the family loves.

I am not at all impressed with this stew! It is just OK. I followed the recipe as directed. I don't get the use of 2 tbls. of bittersweet chocolate. You can't taste it and it was a waste of $$.
A better recipe is using McCormack's beef stew packet and substituting red wine for 1/2 the liquid. Now that's fantastic. This is a bit of a bore.......Sorry!

This was the best beef stew I have ever made. It is so easy and everyone loved it. My boyfriend always wants me to make his mother's recipe, and then I made this recipe and he loved it. I love it that it is made in the slow cooker and you can take it anywhere. We have a plug in in our truck so I can start it at home and then plug it in the truck while we travel so it is ready to eat when we want. Thanks Sandra

I made this for a work potluck, and it was gone, pot wiped clean by bread. Everyone asked for the recipe. I made it for my husband a few weeks later, and this is the best beef stew recipe he's ever had. I added about 3/4 the packet of seasoning and added some roux to thicken Thanks, Sandra!
