After reading the reviews for these cupcakes I started thinking and came up with the idea that I would use a package of black cherry Jello and water uinstead of soda in the cake mix, and and black cherry Kool Aid in the frosting instead of food coloring and cherry extract. I just added the Kool Aid until I was satisfied with the color and taste. They turned out really well.
Easy to follow directions but I read the reviews and complaints about sweetness. The cake isn't very sweet but the frosting off sets that I added a little more cherry extract. the frosting is a little runny but just put it in the middle of cupcake and let it do its thing. I found the cherry extract at walmart (hope that helps.
I had high hopes for these cupcakes. However, despite the addition of black cherry soda, they just tasted like slightly dry chocolate cupcakes. The cherries on top and the colored icing added nice visual appeal, but these in no way tasted like black cherry anything.
I got all the right ingredients and followed the directions EXACTLY and yet my cupcakes didn't turn out well. they took FOREVER to bake( longer than they should have and the icing melted as soon as I stopped mixing it! I couldn't taste and cherry in either the cupcakes or the icing... so I hope every one eles's turned out fine... Not recommended!
    These were great!!!
How much of the container of Vanilla extract do I use?!?!?!????????
These are so pretty and so good! The black cherry soda adds the perfect "sparkle" to the cupcakes. I used a store-bought container of cherry frosting instead of trying to add color and flavor to vanilla frosting. My family loved this recipe - I know I'll make it again soon!
Oh yeah, and by the way, I couldn't find cherry extract so I just got strawberry extract instead and it turned out just fine. :

The problems you found with these cupcakes I have only 1 suggestion for you. For the sake of your family, friends, and anyone else who enjoys and loves cooking....Back out of the Kitchen and stay out its probably best for your own safety as well.
Overall i thought these were pretty good..very sweet! if you are not a fan of chocolate or sweets these are definitely not for you!

The first time i made these, i used her recipe for the frosting (vanilla store bought with pink food coloring). the texture/ consistancy was good, but i did not like the flavor combo with the chocolate.

The second time i made them i used cherry store bought frosting and added a little real cherry juice. the flavor was better but it became too runny. and it was still too sweet.

A third time i used cream cheese frosting with added cherry juice and that one's flavor turned out the best however the consistancy was still too runny.

Overall i would choose the cream cheese frosting for this recipe, the flavor was much better and went well with the cupcakes. it wasnt too sweet.
I made this for a halloween party in my 5th grade class and they loved them!! To make it halloweeny, i used Whoppers, Life Savers and Maraschino Cherries to make a monster face and changed the pink food coloring to black. They turned out great, but I'm rating the cupcake a 4 because I couldn't find the cherry extract so it didn't turn out the way I had hoped.
Apparently Julie just doesn't get that this is "semi-homemade." The "semi" part means that some of the ingredients will be pre-made such as cake mix instead of from scratch. Get it??

Millions of people use cake and cookie mixes with great success and no guilt.

This is a really easy and delicious cupcake recipe so I'm going to give it 5 stars.

I made these for dessert yesterday and they turned out absolutely delicious...everyone asked if they could have another one, and then another one!! I will definitely be making these again :) Only thing I changed was I used the juice from the maraschino cherries in the frosting because I couldn't find cherry extract. Yummy!!!!
Made it for my family and it was the best
I made these for a project I was doing in my German class and the teacher loved them and so did the class!! Super easy to make! The only thing that happened was the room was hot and the frosting melted off but that was the only thing that went wrong. =D
A box cake AND soda? Are you kidding me. This is not baking this is a chemical mess.
I was desperate to find a black forest cake recipe after a certain super center quit carrying in their bakery. I came across this recipe and was overjoyed and couldn't wait to make them. These cupcakes are absolutely delicious! Now I can enjoy black forest cake anytime. I may try different soda and frosting combos to see what else works (i.e. Root Beer).

Thanks Sandra Lee for this recipe, it is really great and yummy!
I wrote down the recipe while wtching the episode. I was having a Yard Sale, so i thought maybe i could make them and sale them. I sold them for 75 cents a peice and he were a hit!! Everyone thought they were FAKE because they were so pretty... everyone kept asking "are those real cupcakes?" LOL... I thought they were YUMMY!! :)
Easy and delicious. I laughed at Rebecca in Katy, TX. You might want to look up "black forest cake" on wikipedia for a little cooking knowledge.
These cupcakes were wonderful. Moist, flavorful and easy to make. I made these for an office potluck and they were the first thing to go. Everyone loved them and could not wait to make them for their families....and I just have to laugh at the ignorance of Katy in TX.
I just finished these cupcakes and they turned out amazingly! It was so much fun to make. They were moist and just yummy as said in my headline. I reccommend this recipe to anyone of any age.

p.s. i'm 11 years old. i made these all by myself. that tells you how easy these are.
I used this recipe to make cupcakes for my 2 year old daughters birthday party. I did deviate a little bit from the recipe though. I added white chocolate chips in the batter for a little surprise inside and also topped it with a cherry (they looked almost just like the picture, I was proud). I sprinkled clear sugar sprinkles all over the top to make it look like glitter. It was a big hit, made 26 for 10 people and they are all gone! Such a big hit, I think I will make them again for other occasions. THANK YOU
I made my cake & frosting from scratch using her concept.

Null as for your disgusting comment, you need to take it else where. That is your view and you are entitled to it, and if someone chooses to use a cake mix that is there choice. By the way you can purchase organic cake mixes. Not to mention you can make your own cake mixes. There is a book called Make-A-Mix and you can make a lot of your own mixes.

Also someone who left a comment could have made the recipe from scratch using her concept only they didn't comment that they did, so you are assuming things. And we all know what assume means.

Too bad you have to use Null instead of a nickname.

These were very good. Could have used a bit more cherry flavor in the cake but moist and chocolatey nonetheless. I couldn't find cherry extract, so instead I added 2-3 teaspoons of juice from the maraschino cherries--good flavor and pink icing!
I loved these and so did my picky in-laws! I'm so happy with this recipe! =)
    awesome
Why do people thinks it okay to but boxed cake mix? Sure, it's easy, quick and cheap, but do you know what chemicals are going into your system? In many cake mixes, canned icings, whipped topping, and other store bought desserts there is hydrogenated oil. Most people don't think of it as that bad, but it's so bad for you. What I don't understand is it's really not hard to make icing, cakes, WHIPPED CREAM (like the easiest thing to make), and many other desserts, so why do people buy it? YOU ARE POISONING YOU,YOUR FRIENDS, AND YOUR FAMILY. Also, if you compare store bought to homemade, homemade taste WAY better. Anyway, thank you for reading this! :)
This recipe was delicious. But instead of the cupcakes, i did a double layer cake. Also, to shorten work time just buy cherry flavored icing, they sell it everywhere, it tastes just the same as putting cheery extract into vanilla, just easier. I topped the cake with chocolate covered cherries and made it for mothers day, it was a great dessert, everyone loved it.
I made these cupcakes for my dughters birthday. They were good, but need more cherry flavor in the cake batter.
They tasted as good as they looked. My guests were so impressed! I would have like a bit more cherry flavor so next time I may chop up some cherries and throw them into the mix. I used Sandra's black and pink party theme and it worked out great!
