After reading the reviews for these cupcakes I started thinking and came up with the idea that I would use a package of black cherry Jello and water uinstead of soda in the cake mix, and and black cherry Kool Aid in the frosting instead of food coloring and cherry extract. I just added the Kool Aid until I was satisfied with the color and taste. They turned out really well.

Easy to follow directions but I read the reviews and complaints about sweetness. The cake isn't very sweet but the frosting off sets that I added a little more cherry extract. the frosting is a little runny but just put it in the middle of cupcake and let it do its thing. I found the cherry extract at walmart (hope that helps.

I had high hopes for these cupcakes. However, despite the addition of black cherry soda, they just tasted like slightly dry chocolate cupcakes. The cherries on top and the colored icing added nice visual appeal, but these in no way tasted like black cherry anything.

I got all the right ingredients and followed the directions EXACTLY and yet my cupcakes didn't turn out well. they took FOREVER to bake( longer than they should have and the icing melted as soon as I stopped mixing it! I couldn't taste and cherry in either the cupcakes or the icing... so I hope every one eles's turned out fine... Not recommended!

These are so pretty and so good! The black cherry soda adds the perfect "sparkle" to the cupcakes. I used a store-bought container of cherry frosting instead of trying to add color and flavor to vanilla frosting. My family loved this recipe - I know I'll make it again soon!

Oh yeah, and by the way, I couldn't find cherry extract so I just got strawberry extract instead and it turned out just fine. :

To Katy in Tx:
The problems you found with these cupcakes I have only 1 suggestion for you. For the sake of your family, friends, and anyone else who enjoys and loves cooking....Back out of the Kitchen and stay out its probably best for your own safety as well.

Overall i thought these were pretty good..very sweet! if you are not a fan of chocolate or sweets these are definitely not for you!
The first time i made these, i used her recipe for the frosting (vanilla store bought with pink food coloring. the texture/ consistancy was good, but i did not like the flavor combo with the chocolate.
The second time i made them i used cherry store bought frosting and added a little real cherry juice. the flavor was better but it became too runny. and it was still too sweet.
A third time i used cream cheese frosting with added cherry juice and that one's flavor turned out the best however the consistancy was still too runny.
Overall i would choose the cream cheese frosting for this recipe, the flavor was much better and went well with the cupcakes. it wasnt too sweet.
