First, it calls for too much sodium. Off the shelf black bean sauce contains about 4500 mg of sodium per 1/2 cup. That's a lot of salt! Second, the cooking time is way to long! I don't know how this recipe made it past the editors. If you mix one teaspoon of the sauce into the water and then microwave for about three minutes you'll end up with better results.

Big fan of Chef Lee. My family don't really like fresh vegetables so I substituted frozen chopped creamed spinach and an onion soup packet for extra flavor. Couldn't find Black Bean Sauce at the regular grocery store so substituted with half a can of Van de Kamps pork and beans with a pinch of black pepper. Now that's home cookin!
