I recently made 6 dozen of these for a cookie swap. I used only an 1/8th of a tsp per sugar cookie mix, any more is very over powering. My kids were not found of any flavoring so I did not add it to the last 2 dzn. I have to say I liked them better that way too. It was a very time consuming recipie but over all made a beautiful cookie.

These were very cute but not all that tasty. If I make them again I will make them smaller and do would a previous poster said and dip them in white chocolate.

First I'd have to say that the recipe should be more specific about what type of things to use. Use the Betty Crocker 17.5 oz bag of sugar cookie mix and then follow the recipe by Sandra Lee exactly. A few other tips, make sure you cream cheese is soft (as in let it sit out all day. Then when you are mixing everything together let your hands get in there and get messy to make sure everything is incorporated.
Also don't try and make the red dough, too red. Food coloring does not have a pleasant flavor.... just make it pinkish. I used about 5-7 drops of red food coloring and mixed (with my hands like crazy.

The cookie tastes pretty good. I like making things from scratch, so it was a little "artificial" tasting to me. But everyone loves the look and they are fun too eat.

My daughter and I made these today after reading through the reviews. A 17.5 oz. package of mix is correct. We used unsalted butter and since we are not big fans of peppermint, decided to use vanilla. As for the red coloring, I could not find the colored gel but did find and use red gel icing. It was a small tube and used it all. We may try 2 tubes next time as the color was not truly "red". I only added about half the amount of flour to get the dough to the proper consistency. We used powdered sugar on our board to roll them out. We placed the 2 pieces side by side, pinched the bottom together and rolled the bottom half in one direction and the top half in the opposite direction. This was easier than braiding but still took a bit of time. The "red" dough was much softer than the "white" so we refrigerated it for a while in a metal bowl. The "white" dough did have a tendency to crack. They do spread, so make sure you have enough room between them on the sheet. They taste great and are very cute. We messed one up and just rolled the dough together and made it into the cane shape. It came out swirled and still cute. We had a lot of fun making this cookie and I'm sure my daughter learned a tips about baking. We are planning to make 2 batches next time, one with vanilla and one with almond extract.

I bake A LOT, and I like easy recipes. I don't know if I did something wrong, but the dough did not form nice looking candy canes, and it took waaaay longer than the recipe stated.
I finally just rolled opposite colors together, and then formed small balls into ropes, then candy canes. I think that cookie-cutters would have been faster.

Made these today with my kids. I read the other reviews and was concerned about the dough cracking and falling apart. I made the dough and put it in the fridge for 3 hours before attempting to roll it. That worked perfect. My family has eaten so many already I have to make more for my gift giving. I also decreased the peppermint flavor just a touch.

My granddaughter and I were watching the Food Network and saw the cookies being prepared. I quickly wrote down the details and we made them the next day. They turned out wonderfully, so quick and easy. Friends are impressed by how Christmassy they look!

These cookies tasted like too sweet mouthwash. Tried one and tossed the batch but was glad to have enough time to make more cookies. I was expecting company and the batch of gingerbread biscotti I made came out of the oven just in time.

I made 5 cookie recipes, all from foodnetwork.com...this particular recipe was the most difficult, and ultimately the least favorite:( Dough was very difficult to twist into candy canes, and taste was pretty bland... might try again, but would probably go to a better Paula-recipe :
