I love this cookie. It is easy to make & everyone loves it. I usually make 2 batches I do one with red food coloring & one with green food coloring. I also make small candy canes so they go futher. it is a fun cookie to add to my annual cookie trays I give out.

This recipe doesn't make the easiest dough to work with. The cookies are really hard to keep together. Use a lot of patience. I thought it would be fun to do with kids, but the dough just kept falling apart. Also, use less peppermint extract. I think I used a quarter of a teaspoon. They taste pretty good, but I think with any more mint, they could be overwhelming.

The dough is GREAT...I did not like the peppermint flavor! I made up my recipe with the dough...
Keep all ingredients the same except add 1 tsp vanilla extract. Roll out the dough, cut in circles and use the dough to make jelly filled sandwhich cookies...YUM!!!! OR roll into balls and make thumbprint cookies. My whole family loves them.

These cookies were not worth the effort in my opinion. I am glad that I listened to others and only put in half of the peppermint extract. They would have tasted funny with the full amount. It was easy to prepare the dough but these cookies were time consuming to put together and frustrating. They are okay with coffee or hot chocolate but I will not make these again next year.

These cookies look so cute and they weren't that difficult to make. I made them with only 1/8 teaspoon of peppermint extract, and that was just enough for me, but I don't really like the taste of peppermint. I think that the full 1 1/2 teaspoons of peppermint extract would have made them taste like toothpaste. I rolled these cookies out on a silpat with just a little flour, and it worked great; I think maybe the fact that I was working with room temperature dough over a hot stove made the cookies easier to twist, and I didn't have any breakage. Overall, I'm definitely making these again because they look SO cute!

I make these every year! I love them and they taste great! However, the dough can be kind of hard to work with, so I just keep some extra flour near by.

Add a sprinkle of Tru Lemon powder to keep that sugar cookie taste for kids.SOmetimes I leave off the egg for a more shortbread cookie. Everyone loves the shape & taste. I backoff on butter a tad to make it less moist.
I've been scratch cooking for 28 years & have manuy signature recipes that people love. I don't always have time to whip up homemade treats for sport & academic teams., Young LIfe or bake sales but Sandra's shortcuts are a life saver.
My teenage daughter loves to do these herself & has taught our French Exchange student who never baked how to make Semi-Homemade for the Junior Class Bajke Sales.

I recorded this episode on my DVR and watched it 3 times, to be sure I understood step by step directions (I was more concerned with aesthetics than anything. Then I printed the recipe and went to make the cookies.
What a waste of time and money! I did not alter this recipe, I followed it to a T and I ended up with a mess that went in the trash.
First: The red dough was very, very sticky and impossible to work with, even after refrigeration, oiling my hands, and finally using flour to keep it from sticking. The food coloring altered the texture and consistency of the dough! Slimy and sticky.
The white dough was fine to work with, but because I couldn't roll and twist them together I just mixed a little of both and made "swirl" canes...
Second: After baking, the candy canes were puffy and wide. Nothing pretty like on TV.
Third: They tasted horrible! Not even okay, horrible! You might as well drink the bottle of Peppermint extract!
These cookies took WAY TOO LONG to even attempt to get one candy cane out of the entire mix! It was a mess and so not worth the time, money, and effort. It all went in the trash; what a waste!

I'm 19, and I hardly ever cook, but I found that these cookies were easy to make and they looked and tasted great. After reading the reviews I cut the peppermint extract to 1/2 tsp. and used red food coloring GEL. My dough was easy to work with. I would suggest refrigerating the dough before forming the candycanes though, because my first batch were kind of flat when they came out of the oven, but after refrigerating the dough, the candycanes kept their round shape much better. Cute cookies!
