This recipe was a delight to my taste buds! If you are a good cook like me, it should come out well and it was perfect! Some people like cheese a lot like me but some dont... i added more cheese but it was still awesome without the extra cheese!!

We liked these potatoes, but wanted to give a few suggestions. Use a lot of montreal chicken seasoning, I put this on while cooking the tater tots, and mixed in more once in the casserole dish. I used 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese and 1 cup pepper jack cheese, and mixed it all together with the tater tots in the dish, with bacon and onions on top. Make sure you drain your bacon VERY well, squeeze it between 2 paper towels, then get new paper towels and do it again. I think that would cut down on the greasy factor a little. Also, you must BAKE the tater tots first before putting them in the casserole, not pan fry according to the recipe. I watched the show that Sandra Lee made these on, and she baked them in the oven first. I would make these again.

I tried this recipe and my family and I loved it...I didnt make alot b/c of other reviews but I wish I did...I drained the grease from the bacon and used pepperjack/sharp chedder which was an excellent blend...I guess the key is to mix the cheese within the potatoes b/c it made a big difference...topping it with bacon didnt make it greasy at all to me...we loved it...

This recipe is a good concept and has potential, though I would do some things differently.
First, I would make the potatoes according to the package, not according to the recipe. The potatoes were not fully cooked by putting them in a skillet for 10 minutes.
Second, I added the seasoning, plus some salt, and it still seemed sort of bland. We needed to add even more salt at the table. Needs more seasoning.
Third, the cheese didn't melt all the way even in the oven, so I had to microwave it for 5 minutes to get the cheese to melt.
I used dried chives instead of scallions, which seemed fine. I alternated adding the potatoes and cheese in the casserole, so that there was cheese in the middle. When I made the bacon I drained it well, so the dish was not soggy.
If I ever decide to make this again, the key change would be to make the potatoes according to the package.

And truthfully for an easy, little different side dish on a busy night, it made the grade. The folks complaining of grease either didn't read the recipe throughly or make the dish according to directions. The only change I made was to use simple salt and pepper. I don't like those multi seasoning condiments. For a once in a while change of pace it is a keeper.
