I made the fish and chips the other night for dinner. The batter turned out great but I wasn't a huge fan of the Tilapia. Like the other reviewers I agree that Tilapia has too strong of a flavor. I know that Tilapia is less expensive but I think Cod is a better choice. On the other hand, the chips turned out well but they did take longer to bake than the recipe stated. I will probably make this again with Cod instead of the Tilapia.

Yall have totally missed the point ...she was trying to show how to make inexpensive meal...Talipia is cheaper than Cod... and in this day and time when people are trying to conserve their money. I think she is doing a good job for showing us how to do things at home instead of eating out which is expensive.... GOOD JOB SANDRA !!!

My family watches the food network together and we pick and choose which recipes to make. We love Sandra Lee! When we saw this we knew right away we wanted to make it! Last night my hubby and I did and let me say it was fantastic! The kids were so excited when they walked in and found that on the kitchen table! So easy and so good! We thought the tilapia was wonderful, but any fish can be used! The chips did take a bit longer but I was using two sheet pans. They were crispy and delicious. I would recommend this to anyone!

I saw this today on t.v. and thought it looked good and easy to make. I had every thing on hand except for the club soda and that was easy to get. The batter was the best part. It was crispy and light. But the Tilapia was a bad fish to use with this. It has such a strong fish flavor that I just can't seem to get past. If I would have had a different kind of fish, like cod, it may have been better. I also made the chips. They took longer than she stated in the recipe. They were okay, nothing special. If I ever make this again I will use different fish. I will keep the batter recipe though. That was great.

I enjoy cooking and, as such, never found myself drawn to a "Semi-Homemade" recipe. However, the recipes on the "Money Saving" show have intrigued me. Sandra actually cooks - yay! In fact., I put the asparagus quiche (From episode one in my recipe box and cooked this fish and chips recipe immediately. It turned out wonderfully! Is it Cordon Bleu-trained chef material? No. But for a busy woman with a family, it MORE than fits the bill.

Recipes, dear ones, are guidelines...substitute the white fish of your choice for the one suggested, omit the seasonings you do not like, and even add some personal inspirations. In short: play! The Food Network, in the spirit of Julia Child, exists to inspire home chefs - not to make them feel intimidated.

Be well, everyone, but most of all: COOK ON!

We loved this and it didn't hurt that it was so cheap! I don't get why the guy below me even left a review since it doesn't seem like he made it. Super simple, I was planning on using whatever fish was on sale, and luckily it was tilapia so that's what I used. Cheap dinner and tasty! Thanks :

I'm sorry, but on her show she said she prefers tilapia to cod. In my opinlion, there's no comparison - cod is a very subtle white fish flavor whereas tilapia has a stronger fish flavor. Maybe she prefers that, but maybe a caveat on her show as to why might help. I agree with the previous poster that substituting a more neutral-flavored fish will make this recipe a knock-out.

Just made this and I thought it turned out great. I used haddock b/c it was on sale for $3.99/lb. The batter was really thick so I added a little more soda water and that batch came out crispier. So, what a cheap recipe and it fed the whole family with leftovers! Thanks for the recipe.
