I made this but I changed it a little. I put the dried fruit in the pan on the stove, drank the port while eating the almonds, and left the ice cream on the counter to soften. When I had finished with the port, the fruit was burned and the ice cream was liquid, but it didn't really matter. Outstanding!

They serve this at my father's nursing home and he loves it. I made some for him the semihomemade way from this recipe, but he said he preferred the former.

I have topped angel food cake with this also, and it's great. This is a perfect staple recipe to make many desserts special!

This might be okay with a sweet wine instead of the port, but as written it is pretty foul.
