Tasted like salty beef boullion cubes with onions floating in it. Probably the worst onion soup I've ever tried. Worse than canned, even. Awful

It's so easy and flavorful! I love it. Now if we could just find an easier way to cut up the onions for it, it would be perfect!

This is the best! Anyone that thought this was too salty or tasteless did something wrong. I made half the recipe and used croutons instead of French bread and it was wonderful. Restaurant quality for sure!! Thanks Sandra! We loved it.

I accidentally bought the wrong broth and not the low sodium. Boy did that make a difference. It was still very delicious. I cant wait to make again and the right way!!

I actually liked this recipe--but I carmalized the onions first. I think a lot of flavor comes from that. I would definitely make it again!

I as well as my family liked the taste of the soup itself, how ever we did not enjoy the bread on top of the soup. I will cook this again and serve the bread on the side.

In addition to the "must-do" changes posted below, you absoluetly have to brwon/carmelize the onions before simmering them or you will have absolutely no flavor! So many of the reviews call this soup tasteless -- and understandably so. Unless you carmelize the onions (called for in every onion soup recipe ever written they don't have any deep, rich flavor. They just taste sharp.

First of all, when Sandra Lee did the show, she made no mention of using reduced sodium beef broth. This was a crucial mistake. If you use regular beef broth, your soup will turn out to be a salty, disgusting mess. So please, don't make this mistake. I also let my soup slow cook for just about 10 hours, which is quite a bit longer than what she recommended. I think my method helped to really distribute the flavor of the onions and made for a richer soup, which is one complaint that several other raters had. Overall, if you make a couple of tweaks, you'll have a pretty good pot of soup on your hands.
