Very good soup, I made enough to have it the next day...It didn't last that long!

Real "French Onion Soup"is thick and creamy -- like a nice gravy. This is a recipe for the Americanized version, which uses a very thin broth. My family has traveled to France and we prefer the traditional thick, creamy soup. So I substituted 4 cans of Campbells "Golden Onion" soup for the 4 cans of beef broth. It's important that you don't add water or you won't get the thick, rich consistency you want. The soup turned out great. I even used Compte -- the French equivalent to Gruyere -- to top the soup. If you prefer cream soups, you might like this version better.

I tried this recipe on Halloween night and it was absolutely wonderful! My family loves French Onion Soup and this was great to come home to after a chilly evening of trick or treating. Could a recipe be any easier? I followed it exactly step by step and the result was a delicious and rich soup. It turned out EXACTLY as I had hoped it would. My family loved it!

The soup turned out inedibly salty, even with lo-sodium broth used. Is consumme saltier? I did not taste it first.

I do not purchase fresh onions, so I used chopped frozen onions, which I thawed carefully before putting into my slow cooker. The soup was delicious and much easier to eat with the smaller bite of onion. As my family does not eat dairy products for health reasons, I topped the soup with a tangle of french fried onion rings leftover from my T-giving casserole. The soup was a huge hit and is now in our regular rotation at the front of our keeper file (if people would quit begging for the recipe LOL. Tnx for helping us "keep it easy and slow."

My husband made this on Saturday and it turned out great! We didn't have gruyere so we just used the swiss cheese that we had on hand. This dish packs a lot of flavor. Thanks.

Very salty and hard to get down. The dehydrated onions from the soup packet were an unpleasant texture. We ended up throwing it out.

If you follow the recipe - it's great. If onions make you cry - just remember: No pain, no gain.
