I have made this recipe a few times and thought it was good as written (mine stayed in the crockpot longer thoughbut was better when I carmelized the onions. Overall a good recipe.

My husband and I both really enjoyed this. I liked that the preparation was easy and it tasted really good. Anything I can throw in a Crockpot on a cold day is a good thing! The only problem I had was getting the cheese to melt like in the picture, and like other french onion soup I have had. I used swiss because I couldn't find the kind suggested, so maybe that was the reason?

After reading previous reviews, I sauteed my onions in a little olive oil, then added 1/2 cup of lower sodium beef broth, cooked about 10 minutes then added the instant onion soup and cooked another 10 minutes. Then just poured the onion mixture into the crock pot with the 2 cans of lower sodium beef broth and 2 cans of beef consomme. Cooked 4 hours on high in crock pot, and voila! excellent french onion soup! Easy peasy.

This soup was "divine"! Everyone loved it and I was a little worried because of the mixed reviews. I did decide to carmalize the onions first since I had the time, and I let it cook for about 10 hours on low. I also used beef broth that was extra low sodium. I buy Great Value brand from wal-mart and it's only 180 mg sodium per cup compared to 440 mg in the swanson's low sodium. I also used parmesan and provolone cheese instead of gruier-upon Alton Brown's advice. Loved It!!!!!

This was the best recipe for french onion soup I have found! It tasted just like a resturaunt! Make sure to use the low sodium broth though other wise it is really salty. I also carmelize the onions before putting them in. GREAT RECIPE SANDRA

i have tried to make various homemade soups at least 5 times now the past few months and it's all bombed! i was so scared to try this recipe with all of the mixed reviews. i think where people might have gone wrong was they definitely didn't use reduced sodium broth and maybe they might have diluted the consomme with water (thinking so because i ALMOST did. i think this turned out great. i cooked it on high for hours. there were a lot of onions but you obviously can add as little or as much as you would like to your own personal serving. this ones a keeper!

I read the reviews before I tried the receipe so I did sautee the onions in margarine before adding them to the slow cooker. I also mixed the onion soup mix with 3/4 cup of boiling water to disolve it. When the family sat down to eat everyone loved it. Thanks for making life easier Sandra.

I am a reasonably good cook and can certainly follow a simple recipe like this one, but the time estimates for prep and cooking were grossly inaccurate. Total time was closer to 90 minutes than 45. The dish was still very tasty and one that my family was happy with.
