Full disclosue: I have not yet made this > Ihave always looked for this mythical "day old bread" but I've never found it in any market,TJ's or whole foods, let alone day old challah. Where do you find day old bread?

If you had watched the show you would have saw that she bought day-old challah bread for 1.50.

Sandra! You are amazing! Helping me find a way to make delicious French Toast is great but the syrup was fantastic and so affordable! I love your new show and look forward to many more affordable and delicious recipes from you! I love your new book too!

French toast doesn't have to be anything fancy (and when it is fancy, it is probably worth doing right and spending a bit of money, but this is fancier than plain and still too plain to be fancy. While I typically save my very similar, but much cheaper bananas-in-syrup recipe for topping ice cream, I assume it would be great on French Toast. So, pricey TOASTED Challah bread instead of stale whatever you've got (which works better anyway, pricier banana mixture....how is this a money saving meal?

(Also, I realize almost no recipes other than my mother's call for this, but it isn't good French Toast if the center is just bread, which means that the bread needs to SOAK... a quick "dip" will not cut it.
