As a finicky eater, my 14 year old son made a sandwich and only put the sauce on half of it. As he put it, he realized "how sad life is" without the sauce on the other half. BIG HIT at my house--the boys are asking to have it weekly. YUM...although I didn't notice a lot of flavor from the rub, I think it probably served to help the juices flow. Very tender, easy, delicious meal.

I fixed this recipe tonight and it was very flavorful. I really enjoyed it plus it didn't take 30 or 40 minutes to get it ready in the morning before you leave. It came together very quick. I had a hard time finding the Teriyaki marinade, but finally found it at Harris Teeter which was out of town (the 2 grocery stores we have didn't carry it. Glad to hear that others had the same problem and used other marinades and it was still good. I used all the marinade package and rubbed it in really well and also used smoked paprika instead of regular. The sauce was delicious, but next time, I'll use less in the crock pot and save a little extra for the sauce, because I just barely had a cup left for the Hawaiian Pizza for tomorrow night. I was wondering if I could use the dry rub marinade overnight on the pork shoulder? Didn't know if anyone has tried that. Both my husband and son really enjoyed it and looking forward to the pizza tomorrow night.

I made this yesterday and it was delicious. The pork was very tender and the sauce was tasty. I used my immersion blender and blended the carrots and onions into the sauce. It thickened it nicely. I also poured to sauce over the meat and mixed it up before making the sandwiches. I look forward to making the pizza tonight.

This recipe rocks!! McCormick's does still make its Grill Mates Teriyaki Marinade seasoning, but it's not widely available. You can, however, order it directly from the company's website at a reasonable cost:
    http://shop.mccormick.com/products.cfm?PageIndex=1&category=7 .
Also, if you have an Asian grocery store in your area, there's a brand of seasonings called NOH that's made in Hawaii that most Asian groceries as well as some of the larger grocery chains (at least here on the West Coast carry -- it's in pouches like the Grill Mates stuff, but one of their products is a Japanese Teriyaki marinade mix that's even better than McCormick's. Whatever you use, this recipe's a keeper. YUM!!!

My husband's favorite thing to do is to watch Food Network on Sundays afternoon. He watched Sandra Lee make this particular recipe, and couldn't stop talking about how good it look (especially since it didn't have a lot of pre-made ingredients because one that can get expensive and two we just like making things ourself hence, that's why we usually do not watch her other show Semi-homemade.
All week he talked about how good this pulled pork sandwich looked, and since her new show is aimed at making inexpensive meals we decided to give her recipe a try.
I'm glad we did. All day the whole house smelled of warm, pork and seasoning. The con of this recipe is that you'll be hungry all day because of the smell. It's that good folks.
When we shopped for the ingredients our store didn't have the McCormick Grill Mates teriyaki marinade. So, we substituted with the McCormick Grill Mates Hawaiian Luau. I think it worked great. We also just broke of a smaller piece of ginger(big enough for 1 Tablespoon from a big one, hence instead of buying a 1lb ginger at $4 we only paid $1 for the smaller piece.
After 7 hours my husband shredded the meat, made the sauce and dinner was served for the family. Definitely use the sauce with the pork. I suggest just to mix the pork and the sauce together, instead of letting people drizzle the sauce over it. I know Sandra Lee suggests using the left over pork for Pork Pot stickers, which we planned on making. However, no pork was left over. That good!

Chili Sauce is generally found by ketchup. I call it ketchup with a kick or adult ketchup. It can also be found near cocktail sauce (but not near seafood in the ketchup section. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ONE FOR THE OTHER!! They are totally different, as is the Asian sweet chili sauce. Hope this helps.

We are very picky eaters and we absolutely LOVED this amazing recipe! I followed the directions exactly, but next time I will use slightly less fresh ginger for the sauce.

I took a bite of the pork while shredding it and it was plain, but when mixed with the sauce it came to life!!! I will definitely make this again!

Also, to the the other reviewers, chili sauce is found in the condiments isle around the ketchup and pickles -- I think any substitutions would be a mistake. I found a plain "chili sauce" jar I think made by Heinz - hope that helps :

the whole day the smell was soooo enticing. It was kind of a bummer when it didn't taste exactly like it smelled. i couldnt find chili sauce so I used taco sauce. the ingredients on that include chili's so i felt that was similar. I added a little bit of jalepeno juice as well. the packet that i used was for the pulled pork. i couldn't find teriyaki either. when we ate the sandwiches, the hint of flavor was there, but I found the insides of the pork didn't pull in any flavor. I think it would be best to maybe marinate the pork shoulder before slow cooking it. Otherwise, it filled our holes.

Could someone please explain to me what chili sauce is? I went looking for some, and there were too many to tell what kind to get. I have something that looks like spicy catsup, and then I found something called sweet chili sauce in the Asian food section. HELP!!
