I made the balls of dough rather large, and they did turn out flat as can be. BUT, I really liked the flavor a lot, and so did my co-workers. They all asked for the recipe and fought over the last one. I explained they were suppose to be balls, but they said they liked the flat cookie better, the ball probably wouldn't be so tasty. All's well that ends well!

My daughter and I made this delicious recipe for a family dinner. What I noticed as my daughter and I dropped the cookies onto our sheet pan, was that the ones that were very small, very close to the one inch the recipe calls for, stayed nice and plump just like the picture. When we got a little heavy handed with the dough and made the mounds too big, they really flattened out. the cookies were great though!!

I expected them to be fluffy like the picture indicated, but mine were flat. No one really ate them, so I ended up throwing most away. I won't keep this recipe to make again.

    I love Sandra Lee's recipes & cookbooks, BUT, this recipe wasn't a
keeper, I ended throwing almost the whole batch of peppermint hockey
pucks out in the garbage. After reading the other reviews, maybe it was the peppermint oil or something, also, if you tried putting them on a silipat sheet instead of the parchment paper, what a mess. The flavor was ok, but,
there's many other recipes out there for peppermint "meltaway" cookies that will work, this one wasn't even close.

I should have known better but...I should have read the variation first and known ingredients were omitted from the "base" recipe. I might try the "variation" recipe and see if the cookie improves. I was expecting shortbread-like snowballs similar to nut snowballs, not "Peppermint Crispies" as another poster called them. My coworkers ate the cookies anyway, but I was quite embarrassed to serve the original recipe cookies.

While I agree it is not what I would call a snowball - I thought this turned out pretty good for a quick easy cookie. It was a hit with my children's preschool friends and was easy enough for my two 5 years olds to help out with. This is great for the quick cookie. We didn't do the rolling out the dough part - maybe that is why ours did not look like pancakes.

I wish I had read the reviews. The taste was fine, but they could hardly be called snowballs - peppermint pancakes would be a better name

Usually before trying a new recipe, I enjoy reading the comments to give me an idea of what to expect, but this time I was rushed and skipped it. Like most of you, my cookies came out flat also, and I was disappointed that rolling them in powdered sugar to look like snowballs would be next to impossible. However, after sampling a cookie, I got over my disappointment in a hurry! The flavor is wonderful, the texture both crispy and chewy, and I love them! I made two batches and included them--with pride--in my cookie gift bags for friends and family. I just renamed them Peppermint Crispies and figure there's no need to tell anyone what they were supposed to look like. And, as for the cookies sticking to the baking sheets, I wouldn't dream of baking cookies without lining the pans with parchment paper.

OK..It seems that the peppermint extract oil is the problem. I tried it with and got the same dime thin cookies..which I suppose could be nice too. I figured the problem is somewhere mixer and brain and left out the extract and viola. Just like the picture (almost. Merry Christmas...cooking is not really a science anyway. Experiment away and expect fails.

Don't waste your time and money on this recipe. The cookies come out flatter than pancakes, as many other people commented. There's no way you can roll them in powdered sugar. I even tried and it made the cookie look like it had wet powdered sugar on it. The taste of the cookie I think is really good, it's just very frustrating to have wasted my money on this recipe. Sandra, if you're reading, I love your quick and easy cookies strategies but please do something to CORRECT this recipe quick so other people like myself won't have to waste their time and money. Thanks!
