Great recipe! I substituted water and did a can of beef broth instead...... and left out the mustard..... Made for a very tasty and savory dish....

VERY DISAPPOINTED in Sandra. I'm not sure why some of these reviews gave 4 or more stars (it's baffling, because this was the worst thing I have ever tasted. My first clue that the ingredients weren't quite right was the lack of "sweet factor". The best flavors to cook meat with are spicy flavors, salty flavors, or sweet (even a combination of all....but never is it a good idea to have "bitter" as your base flavor. Turnips are slightly bitter, parsnips are bitter, the dark beer is bitter, the onion is bitter, mustard (you guessed it is bitter. There is absolutely nothing to balance the bitterness out in this recipe. Save yourself the anguish and disappointment and just put the short ribs in the slow cooker with some onion and a pre-made/store bought sauce (like sweet terriyaki glaze or something. I wasted time and money on this failed recipe.

I followed this recipe to a T. It was excellent! My short ribs were boneless, but really delicious. I had never eaten turnups or parsnips before. I used the fresh herbs. Prepared the slow cooker in the morning, and had a wonderful dinner when I came home from work.

WOW! I fiannly found this recipe.
Been searchng ever since trevor brought this to school for Cow Week. We had to bring anything made from cow. trevor brought this and claimed he got it from sanfra lea. so, i had to go searching for it so i could tell my mom to make. finally found it. It is good , shocking becuase most of sfanra's recipees only have 2 stars. This is a family favorite. i am bringing this to my friend's steven football party with some brusters ice ream and seasoned fries from zaxby's . great combonation. Thanks again. love it.

I was so excited about this recipe, but it was terribly watery and bitter. I think part of the problem was the size of our crockpot-- when it said "add beer and then fill with water until the contents are almost covered," I think a larger crockpot would have required less water. Really, I should have known better and tried broth, but it's also easy to overcook this when it says "6-8 hours." All the flavor was leached from the meat, but I don't know where it went! $30 down the drain, and then we paid to order pizza instead :(

I didn't read the reviews before making this recipe. I got it through today show. It turned out awful. No taste whatsoever. Very disappointed. Should have known when there wasn't an aroma coming from the crockpot.

Sounded delicious but turned out to be very disappointing. The bottom line was it turned out tasting so bland. After finishing our mean both my husband and I were left with the taste of grease. I would not recommend this recipe.

Nothing like a bowl of beer for dinner...this was way to "beery" for my taste. I thought the flavor of the beer would disappear a bit more. My 10 year old was disgusted.
