Ingredients

  • 3 pounds mixed apples, i.e. Cortland; McIntosh; Golden Delicious; Gala; etc., cored and quartered
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 to 1 cup sugar, to taste
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon, optional

Directions

In a large saucepan combine the apples, 1/2 cup water and sugar, bring the liquid to a boil, and simmer the mixture, stirring occasionally and breaking up the apples, for 20 minutes. When the apples are tender and the mixture is the consistency of a chunky puree pass the apples through a food mill and return to the saucepan. Simmer the applesauce, gently, for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Adjust seasoning with lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon. Serve the applesauce warm or chilled.

    Great Applesauce Recipe!!

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
THis was the first time I made applesauce, and I'd have to say that I'll stick with this recipe!! I went easy on the sugar,... but added more cinnamon. I also added about a pinch of ground ginger to cut the sweetness of it. DELICIOUS!!! Even my picky eaters enjoyed this! Also, I used this recipe to can my applesauce. I'm already down to 2 jars in the pantry, and 1 in the fridge. P.S. I also used this applesauce to make some coffee cake...yummy!!Read more

This was my first attempt at applesauce and it was delicious. I did not use nearly the amount of sugar it called for though.... I just added it to taste at the end. Read more

Never made applesauce before... this was the easiest & most simple recipe I found. Tried 1st batch with 1/2 cup sugar and a... sprinkling of cinnamon and was perfect with my apples. 2nd batch I added more cinnamon to my liking! Perfect for beginners.Read more

    Very good

Sweet and tart. I left it chunky since I like texture. Good use of all the apples we've been picking.
