Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon chile powder or paprika
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup amber beer or ale
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • Tabasco sauce, optional or to taste

Directions

In a saucepan cook onions in oil over moderate heat until tender. Stir in garlic, red pepper flakes and chile powder and cook for 1 minute. Add ketchup, beer, vinegar, water, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and Tabasco sauce, stirring to combine. Partially cover and simmer until slightly thickened about 15 to 20 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary, with Tabasco sauce. Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool completely. Sauce can be refrigerated for 2 to 3 weeks or frozen for up to 1 month.

    Spot-on BBQ Sauce

Rated: 5 stars out of 5
This is the single best BBQ sauce I have come across in my research. While the number of components may seem to make the... sauce overly complicated, nothing could be further from the truth. Just follow the simple steps and you will have a balanced, enticing BBQ with real depth of flavor. It opens with a welcoming BBQ sweetness but ends with a nice heat that is not at all overwhelming. In fact, to give the sauce a little side-kick, I replace the Dijon mustard with a brown mustard with some horseradish in it. You will love this sauce. I'm about to make it again now..... :)Read more

    Proud to make

It definately does not taste like commercial barbecue sause that everyone is used to. But I personally think it tastes... better. It is a little tangy and not as smooth with the chopped onions. But it is easy to make and I love having my own homemade sause for people to try. Everyone seems to really like it!Read more
