This recipe is great. Similar to my Mom's best friend, in which I grew up eating her Red Velvet cakes every holiday and birthday. This time I used Nesquick Chocolate Syrup instead of Hershey's powder. It makes a big difference. Everything else is good. Even the amount of oil. My family killed the cake. It didn't last 24hrs and my kids hate nuts.

Dry. I followed the recipe except I used 1.25 c oil and 3T cocoa. I made two layers because there did not seem to be enough batter for three. After baking 27 minutes the cake was slightly over done. The icing is delicious and the recipe makes a huge amount. Too much to use on two layers really but I used most of it. After frosting, my cake cracked right down the middle! The red color using 1 oz of food coloring was beautiful and the flavor was ok. Maybe if I had cooked it for 3 or 4 mins less it would have been better. 30 mins would have been way too long for 3 layers in my oven. I'll keep looking for the perfect RV recipe.

I am giving this recipe 4 stars because after using people's suggestions in the comments it is officially the perfect red velvet recipe. I use only 1.25 cups of oil and I use 3 tsp of cocoa instead of what the recipe calls for. If anyone is not satisfied with the recipe as is try tweaking it with these new amounts. Delicious.

@Krista4756, no, that's not true. The food coloring does nothing except color the cake red, and yes, if you put enough in, the flavor will change a little. There is no reaction between the vinegar and food coloring, and leaving the food coloring out will not change the flavor "dramatically" @emc7991. RV cake is a light chocolate cake with some food coloring in it. Haven't tried this recipe, but I'm about to, with a few tweaks, of course.

The only red velvet cake recipe to use. I live in NYC and have been to the CakeMan's shop. I have also made this recipe several times and it comes out great everytime. Enjoy!

I love this cake! It's gotten fantastic reviews from friends and co-workers as well. I was even asked to bake this for a co-worker to bring to her family's Thanksgiving dinner. It's easy to make; there are simply a fair number of ingredients. I can't recommend it enough!

This cake was awful. The icing was great but the cake had no flavor. I even added 4 heaping tablespoons of cocoa and it was still awful.

The cake turn out very good but I did make some changes to the recipe. I use 3cups of flour since the recipe use some much of veg oil. Also I use 3T of cocoa instead of 3t. It was so good the cake only last 1 hour , if that. This was a super easy recipe.
