Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 teaspoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons medium-fine ground French roast coffee
  • Boiling water, as needed
  • Ice cubes, as needed
  • Equipment: Single-cup Vietnamese-style coffee filter

Directions

Put the condensed milk into a coffee cup. Place the filter on top of the cup. Unscrew the filter, add the coffee grounds, and screw the filter back on. Pour in enough boiling water to fill the filter. Close the lid and let the coffee slowly drip into the cup. Remove the filter and stir the coffee and milk together. Pour the coffee mixture into a glass of ice and stir to chill. Serve.

    Best coffee around

I have always been a fan of Vietnamese "dessert" coffee. This recipe is just as I remember it. Modern latte's don't compare... to this coffee. I do believe the comment about this being low calorie was just a joke. Although the coffee is very addicting, it's not something you want to drink on a daily basis. My suggestion: Lightly cover the coffee grounds in luke warm water before pouring the hot water over; it helps to bring out the full flavor.Read more

    Almost authentic

Sara does real justice to this recipe, but most Vietnamese coffee shops use a blend of coffee grounds and chicory. Look for a... brand called "Cafe du Monde". It's in a yellow cylindrical can smaller than a folger's can found at many Asian markets. These grounds give it a taste that is distinctive from using just french roast coffee grounds. Also, someone mentioned that this was a low calorie drink -- it's not. Check the nutrition information on the sweetened condensed milk. There's quite a bit of fat and sugar -- that's why it's so good!Read more
