OMG. I have never had a Bahn Mi before, but have been craving them since I first heard of them on The Great Food Truck Road Race. (btw Nom Nom should have won Anyway, the chances of me getting a Bahn Mi in Jamaica are slim to none...so decided, last night, to make my own. This is what I've been missing my entire life...I'm dying to try it again and serve it to my friends.

rrmcburn bahn mi sammies are absolutely delish! it's very simple ingredients but so chopped full of flavor and harmony. this pork one is a lil diff from what i am used to as some places will use the bbq pork which is equally good. when i get mine though i usually go with chicken with extra peppers. i would suggest you get on yelp dotty com and look to see if there are any places in your area that serve up banh mi sammies.

I finally gave this a try as we all love Banh Mi very much and can not always go to town to get them. It's a great success, I used pork strips instead of ground pork,i did find some pork liver pate and cha lua from a Vietnamese grocery store. I added julienne cucumber and chopped jalapeno to the slaw, the flavor is just phenomenal, the boys asked for 2nds....pretty close to what they made in Vietnamese eateries. Thanks for the recipe.

As you can see, it is written by a Vietnamese person who knows what they are supposed to taste like. There are a few other recipes on here that completely change the recipe. This is as authentic as they come!
Might I add that another substitute to is liver pate rather than mayo/butter that is used in Vietnam (not the American mayo. This type of mayo is very different.
Anywho, can't go wrong with this recipe, folks :

First, I am Vietnamese and absolutely LOOOOOOVE Banh Mi. It is my favorite food and I traveled to Vietnam eating mostly banh mi. The taste of the banh mi there is authentic and delicious, full of flavor yet simple and cheap.
This recipe has the basic components to making a good banh mi, but it misses the key ingredients I think makes the banh mi so amazing.
First, the spread--a fine blend mixture of egg yolk and oil spread on the side of the bread. Mayo does not give that authentic taste the taste bud desires.
Second, the pate--it's a chicken or pork liver pate that you spread throughout the sandwich. Often, I request for extra pate and spread because I feel they really are the foundation of the baguette.
Third, the hot, spicy sauce (Sriracha, a must-have in your kitchen! gives a good spicy kick.
Aside from missing these key ingredients, the recipe looks good. Often, restaurants change around the recipe or miss the key ingredients that make the baguette what it is. Those carts that used to sell the banh mi is now replaced by shops and the quality has really suffered. It's pretty sad, I think. Because the great banh mi spots are hard to find now.

I added the soy sauce and cilantro to the mayonnaise PLUS 1 tsp of sesame oil and a drop of fish sauce to ramp up the asian flavor. The ground pork spilled off the baguette pretty quickly. Next time, I might try sliced pork (see Emeril's version on this website. Otherwise, version delicious, crunchy with the veggies, plus filling! My boys and husband both said it's a keeper.

My husband hates bologna, and I did not want to throw out the bologna I just bought, so I look for recipe that uses it. It was awesome. My husband likes it so much he asked for a second sandwich. I only use the bologna and slaw; very easy and quick. By the way, I'm from Vietnam (moved here at 18 so I should know how Banh Mi should taste, and I have to say: THIS TASTES AUTHENTIC.
