Ingredients
For burgers:
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
- 1 teaspoons steak seasoning (recommended: Montreal)
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt (recommended: Lawry's)
- 1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar, divided
- 4 sesame seed hamburger buns, lightly toasted
- Lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomatoes
- Grilled Onions, recipe follows
Directions
Mix first 4 ingredients in large bowl until blended. Shape into 4 balls. Poke deep hole in each ball and fill each with 1 1/2 tablespoons of cheese. Mold meat around cheese to enclose. Flatten each filled burger to 3/4-inch-thick patty. (Can be made 8 hours ahead, covered and chilled.)
Grill burgers to desired doneness, about 5 minutes per side for medium.
Place burgers on bottom halves of buns. Top with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and upper halves of buns.
Grilled Onions:
- 2 yellow onions
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Peel onions, leaving root end intact. Slice into 3/4-inch thick rounds. Lay onion flat and insert a toothpick horizontally through at least 1/2 of the onion. This will prevent onion from falling apart on the grill. Brush with oil and season with salt. Place on a preheated grill at medium heat. Cook for 5 minutes on each side or until caramelized and softened. Remove toothpicks before serving.

These burgers were juicy and full of flavor. My husband love the idea of stuffing the cheese inside the burger. the only thing i would do differently next time is make 8 burgers out of the 2 lbs. of beef rather than 4.

I followed the directions, save for I used 1.3 lbs of ground beef instead of 2 full lbs. The burgers were flavorful & juicy, & the tip on using a toothpick to hold each slice of onion together worked really well! My husband really enjoyed these burgers & so did I. I will make again.

I'm glad that I didn't look at the number of stars before I made this recipe! My family and I thought this way a great hamburger and thoroughly loved it. I didn't do the onions because we don't normally put onions on our burgers anyway so we just has the burger and this will be a regular on our grill this summer. I agree that it was way too much meat for 4 burgers - it will make 8 very nicely. Thanks for the great recipe Sandra!
