The secret to making this sandwich is starting with a good quality cut of meat, a hot pan, and only cooking a small portion of the meat at one time so that the meat caramelizes instead of just steams. We like a lot of onions, so we added more. We also added more cheese since we really like provolone -- certainly more than the scant slice shown on the show. Furthermore, we added a bit more salt -- since the 1/4 tsp. salt and salted butter in the recipe, plus the extra onions, did not seem to be enough for that 1 3/4 lbs. of meat. Sometimes, instead of adding more salt, we give it a few shakes of worcestershire sauce, which is also very good on the beef.

I was basically Raised by my best friend's parents Bill and Theresa who both went to Sonny's as kids they brought me to Sonny's probably for the first time at age 7. Now I live in east Fort Lauderdale and whenever I have anything to do in Hollywood I make it a point to stop in and grab a bite. For me the place has not changed in 25 yrs. Thank you John and staff for making Sonny's a place I can remember and the wonderful people who make up my fondest memories growing up.....Deborah Silver-Mullin

I have to tell you I love this show and usually you want to eat everything you see for the most part. I live near Sonny's and have been dying to go there since seeing this episode. I finally made it there last week and ordered a 90 which is meat and onion with cheese and a 50 meat, sauce and onion plus cheese. I will have to tell you I was so disappointed it wasnt even worth the calories!!!! The bread was a bit chewy and the meat had absolutely NO FLAVOR!!! What a disappointment, my husband even had to salt and pepper his to give it some flavor. Have to agree with the other comment not enough onions and the sandwich was on the small side and very greasy!1

I grew up outside South Philadelphia and I had my share of cheese Steaks and I found this sandwich to be the best I've found in South Florida. The generous portion of meet in a perfect matching roll. I could eat there 3 times a week and still spend less than $20....

Went to Sonny's 8/22/09 the sandwich we got was nothing like the one represented in recipe. Ordered one like Guy had, came with very very small amount of cheese , couldn't tell if it had onions or not. Drove 1 hr just for this resturant and was disappointed.

I grew up on Sonny's . My mom had a ceramic shop a few doors down and I was always hung out there as a kid. Now when I get back to Hollywood I love to grab a sandwich. I which we had a Sonny's here in Boynton Beach. Do you hear me John?? LOL , Edith

I grew up in Hollywood and my family ate at Sonny's every week. My parents went on dates there. Four generations of my huge extended family have loved the place. The service is consistently great with no frills but awesome food. The homemade bread is always fantastic. The #90 (the model for this recipe with sauce on the side is delicious, as are the chicken parm & meatball subs. The Hamburger sub (thick patty cut in half to fit neatly in the bun might be the best thing on the menu. I moved away 20 years ago, but go to Sonny's every time I am in Hollywood. Sonny's Steak Hoagies is well worth the trip. John is an icon in my family and a really nice guy. Best wishes to him and God Bless his dad!

I also grew up in Hollywood, although not in the 50's and 60's, but in the early '70's, when Mr. Sonny Nigro gave me my first job ever and I was able to work part time for him and Johnny, who was already there and I believe a couple of years older than me. I have very fond memories of working in a great atmosphere with a great group of people and also of my favorite steak sandwich in the world, the #50 ! (steak & onions with that great homemade sauce I still enjoy dropping in once in a while to say hello to Johnny and enjoy a #50 with my wife and my kids. Many of my family members, even the ones who are no longer in town, enjoy going to Sonny's when they're here. If you haven't been to Sonny's, you've just got to try it !

I grew up in Hollywood in the 50's & 60's. I ate at Sonny's when they opened in '58 and sadly the last time I ate there was in 2002. John's father Sonny was a great man--he came from a generation where a mans word/handshake was his bond. Their Steak Hoagies are the best in the world! The ingredients have always been the freshest/best/first class--just like the man who started it all! Keep up the tradition John--I know your daughter is in the family business--and I hope your Grandkids continue as well! Long live the memory of Sonny Nigro and his beautiful legacy--SONNY"S!
