Thank you, timecain! My Mom used to make coleslaw the way you described it. She died suddenly 5 yrs. ago, and I have been trying to find a simple, good recipe like hers to follow.

I would not make or call this southern cole slaw and to the one that said " carolina likes mustard in there slaw" this is not all true ya'll if you were in the eastern side you would use it with some BBQ maybe but not all slaw is the same as you can tell by looking up slaw on here so with that said here is a simple southern slaw you can make and serve or chill it over night now the bag slaw thats already shreaded well if your lazy thats fine but us people that have no problem with 5 min of work like to get a head of cabbage DIY its freasher and better ok your going to need 1 small head of cabbage cut it in half then in quarters cut out the core then grate place in container to be used add in 1/2 cup mayo (now we use vinegar base mayo if you can't find that go up on the vinegar by 1/4 of a teaspoon at a time at the end of the mixing to get the tartness you like, but the more vinegar the less creamy the slaw I don't like runny slaw but thats me now that the mayo is in add 1/2 teaspoon celery seed then 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar ( if all you have is white vinegar thats ok add a 1/4 teaspoon brown sugar to the vinegar mix untill sugar is disolved
now mix the slaw well add salt / pepper to taste its that easy put it on hot dogs, burgers if you want it as a side dish add 2 -1/2 tablespoons of cubed dill pickles enjoy

I feel vindicated!!! I had said years ago Sandra Lee had the most disgusting recipes on the Food Network...my comments were however edited by the powers that be. After reading the reviews on the slaw recipe, I was kind.

After reading the reviews -- in combination with the fact that I really don't care for Sandra Lee's style or method -- I've decided to bag it. Surely Paula Deen has a good slaw recipe? I suppose all of us annoy someone at some point in time, but after reading the post about Sandra's use of the word "pop" all the time; my pet peeve is her 'ordering' people with 'what I want you to do" -- that has gotten on my last nerve since the first time I saw her. Who does she think she is, barking orders?

Nasty! But anyways, I think this recipe has the funniest reviews of any I've read on the site.
First of all, you have someone saying that most of the negative reviews are from nameless reviewers and she finds this suspicious...as if Ina or Giada are on here secretly bashing Sandra. Check some of Sandra's 1 and 2 star rated recipes...I found it to be just the opposite (most good reviews are anonymous.
Then, on this recipe, most of the people giving it 5 stars weren't even reviewing the recipe...they were defending Sandra. The lady with the conspiracy theory was one of the people who gave it a 5 star rating for no reason.
And boo hoo if people say something is gross and you think they are mean. I noticed all of you so upset by people putting down this recipe said nothing of the recipe itself. Admit it, the recipe sounds disgusting...how can that much vinegar and cilantro mixed be good?

I think it's so funny when people leave such mean reviews. If everyone had the same taste buds then the Food Network wouldn't exist and a lot of people would be out of jobs. Everyone likes different things. If you don't like Sandra's style of cooking then DON'T use her recipes! Same thing goes for any recipe from anyone else. It's one thing to leave a review with suggestions for other people, but to be mean is not necessary. Do you want someone to tell you everything you do sucks? I don't think so. If you don't like it DON'T USE IT. So simple.

I live in NJ and was missing GA and TX slaw. I tried this and had to dump it.
Suggestion:
1 Buy a 16 oz. bag of Dole or such precut slaw.
2 In a measuring cup: add 1/4 cup white (Cheap store bought brand WHITE vinegar. Add to that 1/2 cup water. Then add 1/2 teaspoon sugar. mix well and let sit. (Total volume=3/4 cup liquid
3You need a very large mixing container for the slaw at first. Put the 16 oz package of slaw in. Add salt (like 1/4 tablespoon Add heave ground pepper.(same Then add 1/2 teaspoon celery seed. (IF IN DOUBT: add less salt and pepper: you can always add more later. I do it by sight. Mix all ingredients well.
4 Mix slaw and drys well. Then add the vinegar/water/sugar mix. Mix real well. Let it sit for about 1 hour and size will condense down. Mix sometimes in between.
5 At taht point, I add some real mayo to mix for color and looks and not to take away from slaw. Taste: add more salt, pepper, or mayo. Some of us Southerner's also add musturd at this point. (Carolina's
6 Slaw is best to sit in fridge for 24 hours. Remember: if you add to much ingredients, you can't recover from errors like Sandra recipe. You still even have 24 hrs to adjust and personalize this to be your recipe.
This is as close to the real thing that I have come up with to down home southern style vinegar slaw. Try it and enjoy! : Don

I read all of the negative reviews before I made this and thought that it couldn't really be that bad because some people gave it 5 stars, so I made it anyway. This cole slaw is horrible!!! I followed the recipe exactly and all I could taste was vinegar. My husband thought I was trying to kill him. Now I'm reading the 5 star reviews and realizing that the writers of the review didn't make the recipe, they were just sticking up for Sandra. How ridiculous!!! Why would you give a recipe 5 stars without rating it? This causes people like myself to be mislead!! The purpose of reviewing a recipe is not to like or not like the chef, rate the recipe!!!!! If you are looking for a good cole slaw recipe, look up Paula Deen's broccoli slaw, it is awesome, I make it with dinner frequently and bring it to parties.
