My husband loves anything I make for him! BUT, he said this was the worst thing I ever cooked!! And I agree with him. I will never cook this again. What a waste of great ingredients.

This dish was wonderful. It kinda takes your tastebuds on a ride. The combination works beautifully. I made the casserole in advance, refrigerated it and then cooked it the next day in the oven until bubbly. I made the topping in advance as well and put it in a plastic bag and refrigerated it too. I thought that if I put the topping on right away, that it would get soggy. So, right before baking, I put the topping on. Also, I wasn't able to find frozen or fresh cranberries so I substituted Craisins. I actually think they worked better because it is hard to judge the sweetness of fresh cranberries and Craisins take the guess work out of working with the cranberries.

This was great. Only thing I changed was to use Jarlsberg swiss for $3.99 VS the Grueyere that was $13.99 a pound. I followed the comments to make the topping last & made double. The flavors were great. Next time I will use more rice. I used brown & wild mix. This is too rich for everyday, but I will definately make it for the next holiday. My whole family loved it.

Made this meal for my family a few weeks ago and we all hated it. No one would eat it; such a waste of food! I am an avid fan of foodnetwork and almost always agree with rating of the recipes, but after making this I knew I had to write a negative review. This was just plain gross - I was intrigued by the flavor combinations when I first read the recipe, but the dished missed the mark completely!

this casserole really is super delicious...and well it should be since it has such rich and decadent ingredients!! (hello, when is the last time you made something that called for over 2 cups of heavy cream??! that being said, i don't think it's something we should be eating on a regular basis since it is such a rich dish, but once in a while, i don't think it's a big deal. the only thing i would do differently is wait to prepare the cranberry topping until the end. making it first thing, then having it hang out while you prepare the rest of the dish, was not so great because as it cooled, it really thickened up, and that made it harder to spread across the top of the casserole before baking. it was still very delicious, maybe just not as pretty since i couldn't get it evenly across the whole dish. i think if the cranberry part is prepared at the end rather than at the beginning, this dish would be even more perfect!

In answer to Albert from Chicago, I tried Fat Free Half & Half and it didn't work it was too watery. Maybe cutting down the amount would be ok.

The casserole was fantastic; rich in flavor. I have to admit I did change it up a bit. When I saw her make it on the show I thought I have to try this and then she got to the sweet topping and she lost me. I was disappointed but so enthused to try the recipe that I decided to tweak it a little. For the topping I left out the cinnamon, brown sugar and cranberries then substituted that with 1 package of frozen chopped spinach(heated & drained. Although it turned out great I think next time I'll use two packages so, it will cover the entire top thicker and without spaces. Also. I made a few other substitutions, I used wild pilaf rice mix (2cups and chicken thighs(4-5 because I was not going back out to the store. Next time I may try the topping the recipe gives.
Oh... I live in Cali too and the rice was about $2.87 at Winco store and the cheese was $3.35 for a little over 2 cups at BelAir store.

This casserole is wonderful. But like someone said, it can get expensive. The wild rice and Gruyere cheese alone come to over $14.00 (here in California. So expect to spend some money making this one, although it's worth it. Something you probably won't make every day anyway.

I had no cranberries to make the topping, so I added diced sweet potatoes in the mix instead. I diced the sweet potatoes into small cubes and cooked them with the onion and mushrooms. It gave the dish a slightly sweet flavor! Delicious!!!!

I always like to put my own spin on recipes - I don't like sweet things in my dinners, so I didn't put in the sugar or cranberries. I added two teaspoons of cumin, two cloves of chopped garlic & half a red bell pepper when cooking the mushrooms & onions before mixing it with the chicken, wild rice & cream, then placed it in the casserole dish, topped it with grated mozzarella & baked it. Yum!
