My mom used to make pea soup with ham hocks, I was so surprised that it tasted for the most part the same. And it seem so much easier. I will use this again for sure!

I have made split pea soup recipes for the last 45 years, and this is the best recipe I ever made. My family finished the pot and wanted more. The next time I will make a double recipe. Thank you Sunny.

i made some modifications to this recipe - as i do to most recipes. You really shouldn't say that there's no flavour because you should always flavour to taste. My modifications: i used regular thick cut bacon and cooked it until crispy. i added two large russet potatoes as a thickening agent and it definitely made the soup even more tasty! and the final modification i made was that i didn't put any cumin into the soup. Overall this soup was UBER delicious!

While watching this on TV I realized I already had everything but the bacon and peas in my fridge! I ran over to Whole Foods and was dismayed to find they don't sell slab bacon. They do sell Black Forrest Bacon and it makes this dish SO much better!! I would recommend cooking it in a separate pan in strips and then cutting it up after. (not like how she did it on the show
The lime and tomato garnish is a must! Don't skip this. It gives it another diminution of texture and flavor. I have made 3 batches of this soup in a week. It so good for you and so YUMMY!! everyone keeps eating it!

This was my first attempt at making home made pea soup, normally I dont eat it and give DH the can version. This was so easy to make and I even enjoyed it. I did cook the peas for longer and pureed everything. I did not add the cumin, not a cumin lover. I will be making this again and again come fall/winter. You really need to use the bacon to get the perfect taste I think. Made home made pita chips to go along side it. I would recommend this soup for sure !

I didn't enjoy the texture of the peas. I think they need to cook a little longer than the recipe states. Also, the cumin made it a little too smoky for me.

Much more flavorful than my usual split pea soup recipe. Sauteing the veggies in bacon drippings adds a lot of flavor!!! Threw in a hambone with bits of meat on it that I had thrown in the freezer from Easter to give it even more flavor.
I pureed the whole pot because I like the smoother consistency (need to get myself an immersion blender...doing it a few cups at a time in my food processor was a pain! I didn't care for the diced tomatoes on top...I thought it was too intense and took away from the soup, but hubby liked it.
Leftovers are even better!!!

Loooooved this recipe! It is totally different from the split pea with ham soup that I have grown up with. Added a little celery salt and a touch of cayenne at the end and served it with some homemade crusty bread. We really enjoyed the garnish of bacon, tomato, and lime. This recipe will go in my keeper file!

Instead of using bacon which can be quite expensive, I've used smoked pork neck bones. Not only are they much less expensive but are quite meaty, very tastey and not as fatty.
"Try it you'll like it!
