Not Sunny's fault but 30 minutes is way too long. I didn't keep tabs on my cake and it came out really dry and the red wasn't as prominent. The cake itself doesn't have that much flavour, so all the taste comes from the icing. My cake came out a nice red (I used 65ml, which is a little more than 2 ounces. Overall, keep tabs on your cake!

Can anyone give me some advice on what kind of red food coloring and cocoa they used. I used Hershey's cocoa and my cake isn't done but looks like chocolate. It lacks that rich red color like all red velevet cakes. I appreicate any help. Thanks

I'VE TRIED TWO RED VELVET CAKE RECIPES, BOBBY FLAY'S AND SUNNY'S. OUT OF THE TWO CAKES, SUNNY WINS HANDS DOWN. HOWEVER, THE PECAN CARAMEL FROSTING THAT SUNNY MAKES WITH THIS CAKE; THE RECIPE IS INCONSISTENT WITH THE ACTUAL RESULTS. I STRUGGLED AND STRUGGLED WITH THIS FROSTING. COOKED IT THE WAY THE RECIPE STATED AND IT TURNED OUT MILKY AND PASTY. SO, I DECIDED TO COOK THE SUGAR FIRST WHICH TURNED TO THE CARAMEL STATE AND THEN ADDED THE OTHER INGREDIENTS. IT CAME OUT TASTY. BUT I THINK I WILL KEEP PRACTICING WITH OTHER PECAN CARAMEL RECIPES UNTIL I GET IT TO THE CONSISTENCY I AM LOOKING FOR. OTHERWISE, THIS RED VELVET IS GREAT!

I just wanna thank Sunny for this awesome recipe. I made this recipe with just the cake mixture 'cause I am a cream cheese frosting girl. This cake was just the BEST. I gave it to my children and they started dancing while they were eating it. This is the second red velvet cake recipe I've tried and so far this recipe is the one I will use often. Now I know were to come when I want an awesome dish. Thanks Sunny, you've brought out the 'betty crocker' in me:
Please keep up the great work.

This was the best Red Velvet Cake I have tasted since living in the south. Use a straight up cream cheese and powdered sugar with a splash of milk icing recipe it blows the flavor away!

    Thanks Sunny!

This turned out to be an excellent company recipe because of its unusual rectangle shape. Very moist, and all my friends loved it and asked for the recipe. Love the show!

...must come out. Not to be crass, but do be aware that the high levels of food coloring can make for some interesting after party stories with family, especially if you use green food coloring since the store was out of red! And I only used half of the required, and substituted the rest with water! Next time, I'll likely just use water. :p

Other than that, quite tasty! Oh, but I did use store bought cream cheese frosting since I ran out of time to make my own.

Cake was the best I've made from scratch yet. Very moist. The frosting was just to pasty. Will make again, but with my frosting.

I have made several other red velvet cakes using other recipes. This one by far it THE best. I did goof on the frosting, by adding the nuts in with the other frosting ingredients. It still came out great & impressed my friends. It tasted & looked like German Choc cake frosting when the nuts were cooked with other ingreds. Next time I'll be sure & not add nuts during cooking.
