I have to say the combination of vegetables in this recipe along with the "to die for" gravy make this the best shepherd's pie ever. The BEST shepherd's pie i've ever had or made.
Don't try any other recipe. This is a few notches above any other recipe.

This recipe is the easiest and the most flavorful I have ever made. You don't even need to make the gravy! It's the best, no need to look any further.

While it takes about twice the time as indicated to make, this dish is well worth the time, trouble and wait! We're 74 and 64, respectively, and neither of us have ever had a Shepherd's Pie to equal this one. My husband made 2 slight modifications to the ingredients, one because we both like our food spicey, and one out of necessity. We were without tomato paste, so he used ketchup (no noticeable difference to add a little "kick", he julienned 1 Pablano pepper - this really added more flavor. (These peppers are not very "hot", but have great flavor.

Hat's off to Sunny Anderson on this one. It will definetly grace our table again come Fall. This is our new "comfort food".

This is a family favorite. To make life easier, we use instant potatoes and don't even bother making the gravy because it's good enough as is.

It's a complete meal in one casserole dish. Love it!

I love Shepherd's Pie and have tried lots of recipes. This is the best one I have found so far. So so good! My husband loved it too. Only complaint was it did take a little while to make and put together but was SO worth the effort. Best part is the mushroom gravy for the top! Oh, yea...it is kind of spicy. But, you can adjust that part.

This is delicious!! I used this for a Ladies Guild luncheon and it was a huge hit. It has a kick to it so if you don't like alot of spice, cut back on the cayenne pepper and paprika. Regular paprika would work just fine too. I used regular paprika to garnish. I also used store bought mashed potatoes as a time saver. The gravy takes a while to thicken but is delicious and could be used on other dishes. This dish is a little bit of work but worth it!!

First of all I have made this a bunch of times! And going to again this weekend for the in-laws! What I have read as far as complaints go they were all about the prep and dishes... To make it easy on my self I buy pre shredded carrots its not that much more and pre sliced mushrooms. I also freeze the cheese for a littke bit (not so it is frozen just really cold So it helps with the ease of shredding. I know that the gravy is the long part to wait for it to reduce but other than that I think that it is a wonderful meal! Maybe not easy for a working mom on the week night! The only other things that I do differently is I add an orange or yellow pepper and you can also ribbon your zucchini (with a veggie peeler just add it last since it will be "thin" compared to the other veggies. You can also try switching up your potatoes to yukon gold or red. They have a thin skin that can be mash in or peeled easily after the have been cooked (just dont burn your self I also use a slightly bigger pan so I use a few more potatoes, I noticed that the potatoes didn't reach the edge of the pan. and I use more garlic while cooking them too! I hope that some of my short cuts or ideas help some of you! And happy cooking!

I was surprisingly delighted with how this one turned out! Separately, the layer's (i.e. meat, veggies weren't impressive but when you bite into them altogether---OMG, IT'S THE BOMB! it's so good and just loved the texture of the zucchini and carrots (i normally repel veggies and the creaminess of the mashed potatoes and chewiness and spicyness of the meat. Next time, I would be careful seasoning each layer though...mine came out too salty...so cut back on the salt a bit because once they're baked with the cheese, it all adds up. It is very time-consuming (it is 4 layers but worth it especially for a special occasion.

My husband LOVED it. And, I was able to get some vegetables in him without all the complaining.
