These biscuits are GREAT! I made them for a biscuits & gravy recipe. I didn't have vegetable shortening on hand, so I used 1/2 cup of salted butter instead. I used a great trick to incorporate the butter into the flour mixture: grate the stick of butter on a box grater (making sure the butter is just out of the 'frige & very cold. Once the butter is completely grated, use two knives to cut the butter into the flour. I didn't add any salt to the recipe because of the salted butter, & it worked out perfectly!

I first tried Tyler's "buttermilk biscuits" recipe and wasn't pleased with the result. So I tried these, and though they are better than the first recipe, they still didn't turn out like the biscuits I've gotten from resturants. Not sure where the gap is, but I'm still searching for a really good biscuit receipe.

btw for the "no southern comfort on a plate", if you read the "southern comfort on a plate" review, you'll notice that they note that they were glad they "doubled" their recipe, hence the two sticks plus 2 tbls. for a regular recipe, that would be 1 stick of butter plus 1 tablespoon. that may be why you nearly burned down your house.

as for tyler's recipe, just beautiful!

OMG! Tyler rocks! These are the best I have ever made! The people who gave bad reviews on this are simply nuts or they dont know how to use an oven! LOL
This will be my official biscuit recipe for sure!
    Thanks Tyler!!!!!!

I loved this recipe. I am always looking for bigger and better recipes, and this is it. Very light and raised nicely. The little indention on the top was a very good tip. This will be my biscuit recipe for now on. Thanks Tyler.

i think it is too much salt, the biscuits came out salty, i didn't want to cut it in half to see how they will turn out!

I nearly just burned my house down, thanks to "Southern Comfort on a Plate," who recommended substituting 2 sticks + 2 T butter for the Crisco. I used just 2 sticks (1 c.. The butter ran over the sides of the baking sheet and caught my oven on fire. Had my daughter not smelled and seen the smoke, we probably would have had a gas explosion and be dead.

I think "Southern Comfort" meant to say she substituted ONE stick of butter. Please don't make the same mistake I did.

SOOOO, I made the recipe again with Crisco. This time the dough was so sticky I couldn't work with it. It was just a blob of goo. So I added more flour to be able to handle it. I must have overworked the dough, because this batch came out dense and tough.

I think I'll go buy some more Crisco and buttermilk and try again. I'll let you know if I can finally get it right.

These were my first attempt at making biscuits, and I will *never* use another one. I used butter instead of shortening, and two knives since I don't have a pastry cutter. These are so fluffy and light, better than anything you can get in a restaurant. Love them!

I have been trying for years to make biscuits that don't turn out like hockey pucks and I finally found the recipe that is a keeper! I, too, used butter and I would say that if you use salted butter, cut out the salt from the recipe. The folding really makes for fluffy biscuits and the ones from the scraps aren't tough at all.
