On no! No, no, no, oh God no. This recipe ruins the very idea of sewed tomatoes and black eyed peas. Way too much sugar! Worst of all, you never, never, never mix the stewed tomatoes with the peas. Rather, you cook the tomatoes down until they are thick. Then spoon the tomatoes generously over a bed of peas, almost like a spaghetti sauce (for a real Southern version, mash the peas first!. There are great Black Eyed Peas and Stewed Tomato recipes out there; this isn't one of them.

Would have to agree with the other reviewers . The sugar was way to much it made the the pea and tomato dish to darn sweet . If i make this particular recipe again I will omit the sugar all together and probably add some type of vinegar and even something to add a bit of heat, perhaps dried red pepper flakes or an actual jalapeno that has been seeded. I would probably omit the ham hock as well . It did not add the smoky / salty flavor i was looking for . Might try some thick cut smoked cured bacon . Hope this helps.

I didn't care for this recipe at all. The 1/4 cup sugar in the tomatoes made everything too sweet. If I try this recipe again I will definitely cut most or all of the sugar. I might try adding some balsamic vinegar to the tomatoes instead.

terrific. (didn't give it 5 stars only because i think that rating should be saved for truly spectacular dishes. there was nothing wrong with it, though, and plenty right! made a vegetarian version that turned out surprisingly well, given how simple the recipe is: to compensate for the lack of ham hock, i added about a tablespoon of soy sauce. i also used a mixture of regular sugar and honey to give the sweetness more depth; i didn't veer from the stipulated volume, even though others found it too much, and found the sweetness was balanced nicely. will make this again, definitely.

Delish! I used the whole amount of sugar and also added a splash of madeira to the tomatoes. It wasn't too sweet but that may be because at the end I added some browned andouille sausage. The sweetness was perfectly balanced with the spice. Will make again.

Whole Family loved it!! I read the reviews prior, so I used 1/8 cup of sugar as suggested by many, and it was perfect. I believe 1/4 cup would have been way too sweet. I didn't use any meat because it was a side dish to my chicken - it was delicious !!! A keeper for sure.

OMG! Just made this tonight since I don't know what state I'll be in once the sun rises. This is soooo good. I'm hoping that, like most dishes, the next day it will be even better. I did exactly what Tyler said to do. YUM!!!

It is New Years Day and we wanted to make our traditional black eye peas for good luck and prosperity. This recipe was a bit different, but we love many of Tyler's recipes so we gave it a try. This one is so good. Don't let the sugar worry you. It elevates savory to a whole different level. The only thing we changed was to render some thick cut apple wood smoked bacon to it chopped instead of the ham hock. And yes you can use canned peas.

I made this recipe for a traditional New Years Day dish last new years and I'm pulling up the recipe to make it again this year! everything was perfect! I did adjust the amount of sugar because some people said it was too sweet and it was PERFECT! I can't wait to make it again! I served it over rice and even my "picky" eaters loved it and ate seconds - people who don't like black-eyed peas! I highly recommend!!!! ENJOY!

This was my first time making black-eyed peas and they came out great. My husband grew up eating this dish and he says that it tastes just like his mom's recipe. The only modification that I made was using 1/4 cup of sugar (I think it would have been too sweet with anymore sugar. I'll definitley be making this dish again.
